What ever happened with the original Golden Plate?
and does this mean that they might discontinue the Nightmare series since they came out with the lesser which you can get 10 levels lower and for half the price?

The Golden Armor was the first million dollar armor set that came to AQ in 2004. However in July 10, 2005 this armor, along with the other golden parts such as the Golden Axe and Golden Shield got replace by the Nightmare set.

I heard that the Nightmare set will end on August 31, 2006.

Note: Even though these armors are lesser versions of the originals, it still doesn't mean that they are not worth getting. While the lesser armors have slightly less defenses then the originals, the lesser armors attacks remain the same as the originals which should be great news for anyone who can't get enough money to buy the Nightmare Plate and those who came after the Golden Armor left Yulgar's Paladin Shop.
