[ Code Age ] - Official Information Thread

- Code Age Commanders
Square Enix takes the veil off its new franchise.

April 1, 2005 - Last year's Japanese release of Dragon Quest VIII brought with it the first trailer for Square Enix's all new franchise, Code Age. It took about four months, but we now at last have specifics on what Square Enix has planned for the property.

Code Age is going to be a big franchise for Square Enix, with products appearing across all forms of media. Already, a Code Age comic has been announced, set to be published in the monthly Shounen GanGan comic in Japan. Gamers looking to experience the franchise will be able to do so through Code Age Commanders, a new fantasy action RPG featuring being developed for the PlayStation 2. There's a third project known to be in the works, but its identity has yet to be revealed (we've got our money on a cartoon).
Code Age Commanders takes place in a world known as the Kyuunai Sekai, a Japanese phrase that can be translated to "world within the globe." The world has at its center a sphere-shaped object known as Central Code. Much like our Sun, Central Code is visible in the sky, although the "planet" on which mankind exists actually surrounds it, rather than rotating around it.

Every-so-often, in time frames measured in tens of thousands of years, Central Code goes through what's called "Reborn," a transmigration period during which all life on the planet dies off and the world is born anew. Mankind has become so technologically-advanced that it knows a Reborn is about to take place, and to prevent its own extinction, it creates a massive ark surrounding Central Code. All of mankind boards the ark and enters a deep sleep, planning to awaken once Reborn has completed and the new world is born.

Things don't go according to plan. The ark is damaged and people are sent falling back to the planet's surface, apparently before Ribbon has completed. One such character is the game's young hero, Jean. Jean awakens on the planet, which appears a different world, and is drawn into a war with strange, unfamiliar creatures, the so-called "Otero." The Otero are a dangerous bunch who can possess humans, turning them into what's referred to as a "Coded," where they lose their will.

Jean undergoes a transformation early on in the story. He becomes a War Head, a creature somewhere between a human and a Coded, preserving the will of man but with what appears to be greater powers. War Heads have the ability to transform parts of their bodies into weapons, a skill that they use to fight against their enemies.

Jean's arm transform into his weapon, and you make use of this in the game's action-oriented battle system, the exact nature of which is unknown at this point. Jean rises in ability as he fights, and you're given the opportunity to customize his development path to your liking, building him into a powerful War Head.

Square Enix has just opened the veil on Coded Arms, revealing background story and hinting at strong action elements. We'll have to wait for a future update from the company for specifics on gameplay. Development is only at 50%, so don't expect this one until later on in the year in Japan and some time after that in America.

re: [ Code Age ] - Official Information Thread

Good info there SY, and nicely presented might I add. I am not as neat but the info is just as good hehe. Lot's of good stuff here from RPGamer:

quote Story Details
Along with yesterday's announcement of Grandia III, Square Enix also revealed a title named Code Age Commanders; a new game in the Code Age anime, manga, and game franchise for the PlayStation 2. Specifically, this revelation was disclosed within the pages of the April edition of Famitsu, which RPGamer has acquired scans of and has subsequently translated. While gameplay details pertaining to the game were slim to none, a bevy of story information was to be mined from those pages.

The story of Code Age Commanders is set in a Dyson Sphere; a hollow world with people living on the inside. The middle of the sphere is home to the "Central Code." Every ten thousand years, the Central Code goes through a transformation, which results in the total destruction of the Dyson Sphere, followed by its rebirth. Of course, this outcome is less than desirable to the people living within the Dyson Sphere. Thus, they tried to escape by creating a gigantic station around the Central Code itself. As things usually do, things went somewhat amiss, and the station finds itself sunken to the surface along with its passengers.

Jean, one of the passengers of the station, fills the main character role in Code Age Commanders. Dropped into a world which he no longer recognizes, he sets off to find his sister Alize, another passenger from the station. Alize had been with him when the station "sank," but was soon kidnapped by a strange creature.

Thanks to the Central Code's impending transformation, the world has found itself heavily populated by strange and warped creatures. One species, called "Othelos," seek out and possess humans, turning them into what are called the "Coded." Completely stripped of free will, Coded humans become nothing more than extensions of a hive mind. On rare occasions however, humans won't turn into Coded, and instead mutate into "Warheads," who are Half-way between human and Coded and can still act on their own free will. Warheads have bodies that have evolved to the extreme, and certain actions lead to permanent abilities.

Jean finds himself becoming a Warhead, and gets caught in the middle of an Othello battle soon after setting out in search of his sister. At first glance, his body doesn't seem that much different from ordinary humans, but when a battle occurs his whole arm transforms into a weapon. As Jean levels up, this weapon levels up with him, becoming better and more versatile.

It seems as if it doesn't take long before Jean gains a few allies, but no details concerning other playable characters have been released as of yet. The battle system is also shrouded in mystery, with the only thing being known is that it will employ a "Ring Gauge System," which looks to involve a ring gauge that appears around the character. Furthermore, there will be differences between night and day in the game, though more details concerning this is also unknown.

Toshiyuki Itahara, who worked on such titles as Final Fantasy IX and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles will filling the role of director of Code Age Commanders, while Akitoshi Kawazu and Yusuke Naora will act as executive producer and concept designer respectively.

Currently, Code Age Commanders is 50% complete and has yet to receive a Japanese release date. The prospect of a North American localization is equally unknown.

  • quote Website up
The official website for Square Enix's upcoming franchise, Code Age, is now up and running. As far as the layout goes, the site is basically divided into two main sections: one dedicated to the manga/comic end of the franchise and the other hosting information and media for the upcoming game, Code Age Commanders. Each section has its own character and plot descriptions, as well as news updates, but unless readers are fluent in Japanese, the only things they'll probably be able to enjoy on this site are the trailer and a few of the concept art pictures scattered amongst the pages.

For a better look at Code Age Commanders, one can also refer back to a recent article published on RPGamer that lists a few of the things players might come to expect from Square Enix's developing game. And as always, when future details and media are disclosed, RPGamer will be sure to share them.

The third installment of Code Age, titled Code Age Brawls, has been confirmed to be a cellphone-based 3D online RPG. Currently no specific information regarding the cellphone provider and supported models is available, even though odds are Code Age Brawls will follow the lead of Before Crisis: Final Fantasy in being offered to users of NTT DoCoMo's FOMA 900i series cellphones. re: [ Code Age ] - Official Information Thread

Hmm well Rpgmaniac bugged me to get some new info so here is some stuff I found hot off the presses at RPGamer.com:

    quote
Square Enix has divulged more details on one of the games in its new concept brand, Code Age Commanders. More specifically, the game's offical site was updated with previously unannounced character details.

Information on two new characters, Kilroy and Meme, was recently added to the official site, joining Gene and Aliz in the game's cast. Kilroy was an assistant builder to the Ark, and once it was destroyed by the Central Code he decided the best way to protect the stranded people, along with his mentor's ideal, was to become a Warhead. His companion, Meme, is also a Warhead. She is a determined, optimistic young girl whose past is shrouded in mystery.

Code Age Commanders is a continuation of the anime, manga and game series for the PlayStation 2. Plans for a Japanese release date or North American localization are still unknown.
Oddly enough this stuff isn't even on the main page yet so it's brand new for us
