The two PC Final Fantasy games has issues with Nvidia's TNT series. I had a TNT2 M64 and although it ran, it ran slowly, some graphics were corrupt and it did crash to desktop occasionally (don't even ask how VII reacted) it should run better if you get a new graphics card.

I found this thread via Google and was hoping someone could help me with a very strange problem I'm having with FF8 for PC. The red "target" cursors are on as a default and I can't figure out a way to turn them off. There's nothing in the manual about such icons, and I've tried every possible key during battle. Also, this is my second play-through of this game and I don't remember having these issues last time. Screenshots here and here, so you know what I'm talking about.

Right, first off are you still using the default keys? These should be:
Q W E A S D F Z X C and the arrow keys. I presume you have tried these. If you press Q when selecting an enemy it will brin up a box that allows you to select from all enemies easier, this may get rid of the target indicators, but I'm not sure. The only other thing I can think off is to hold each of the buttons for a short time, sometimes the keys don't register straight away in my game. One thing I will add, to turn these off, they have to be currently active (as far as I can remember) so target an enemy before pressing the buttons if you aren't already. ------------------- 'Actually one thing stopped me in my tracks. It's not the video card, those target indicators are in FFVII and FFVIII, and they can be turned off.
I've had another idea (I'm going to have to install it again and look for this if this doesn't work) try going into config and see if there is something like target indicators in there. If so, turn them off... ------------------- 'Actually one thing stopped me in my tracks. I turned on the TV the other day and I saw Britney Spears doing "My Perogative". Hi, just wonderin if anyone ever got back to the guy who wrote the starting msg of this thread? See, I have the same problem.
My PC is a Windows 2000 Professional machine, 700 MHz Celeron CPU, 256MB RAM, Geforce 2 MX440 (Old, I know!), n loads of space on the hard drive. I recently bought the game n every time I try to play the game using the Hardware Enabled mode in the configuration program I end up with the game running with lots of annoying lines running across the screen. The only time they don't show is when the game starts a battle, n then everything runs nice n smooth like it should do. Please, does anyone know how I can get the whole of the game to run smoothly in Hardware Enabled mode? Any help would be much appreciated, please reply either on here, or preferably to my email address as I dont frequent this forum often.

I've tried the game patched and unpatched, checked the settings in the game, tried various keys, but nothing works. If I knew exactly what to look for in the config file, I'd be willing to go in there and change things.

Not the Config file, Config in the in-game menu. I will install this again later and search for it myself so I know for certain how to change this.
The lines on the field screens are down to your graphics card. I had that problem with VII and my TNT2 (I know... I need a new card, will get one with my new comp soon), my mate has a Gforce 4 and has those same lines you describe when playing VIII. I managed to fix the problem with VII by downloading the TNT patch for it. There may be a similar patch for VIII, I don't know, I haven't looked yet. The best thing to do though is to get a new card, the patches normally reduce performance. If you have a good computer you may barely notice it, but even a 1.6 Ghz shows an effect on loading times in VII. ------------------- 'Actually one thing stopped me in my tracks. Hi everyone,
I'm having trouble getting my version of FF8 to even start! I've installed it, I've tried running the FF8.exe file, but nothing happens. I'm running Windows XP Professional on an Athlon 2500 XP with 1 gig DDR RAM, 256 MB video card, DVD-RW drive and a 120 gig hard drive. I've tried adjusting the compatibility settings so it runs to Windows 98 configuration, but it didn't make any difference. Any ideas as to what I can try now?

Ah hell... Windows XP: The bane of all PC Gamers. The best advice is to get rid of XP and go back to Win98 but I doubt that you will do that, so let's have a go...
El Tano Sorry dude, but I'm not quite sure what your problem is. At a guess I would say that you are having trouble reading the text? If so, enable Font Smoothing (not sure how you do this in XP, but it's probably still in the display dialogue box in the control panel). And make sure that the box that says "Enable <something I can't remember> (Requires at least 8mb of VRam)." On the final page of the FFVIII config that you access via the start menu. YulY Have you tried compatability mode? That may work. YulY and darthbarry If compatability mode does not work, then you can try the patch avaiable from the Eidos site (Links below). gabanski83 There is a patch available if you don't already have it. The link is below. Geforce graphics card owners ftp://ftp.eidos.co.uk/pub/uk/final_fantasy_8/patches/FF8EidosEngNVPatch.zip Non Geeforce graphics card owners ftp://ftp.eidos.co.uk/pub/uk/final_fantasy_8/patches/FF8EidosEng.ZIP Reeve Sorry man, but I am unable to find a way, short of editing the game files, of turning those damn target indicators off. If you want to attempt to edit them, then I can suggest this site: http://www.qhimm.com. They have the tools neccessary, and there is a forum that (if anyone is still there) you will be able to get help from. EDIT: I forgot the http:// infront of qhimm.com so it would not have worked if you tried it. It should work now.
