some reviews say six while others say sixteen. so how many characters are there?

There are twelve characters in the whole game. Venus, Frost, Red Minatour, Talon, Lady Butterfly, Devil King, Scorpio, Azure Dragon, Q-Ball, Hornet, Iron Ox, and Puff. Theose are playable characters. Npc's are Reaper, Zaan, Kahz, Arslan, Orwik, Irdene. Hope that answers your question.
