Jak X: Combat Racing

Hey Naughty Dog, what gives? When you first announced you were making a racing game based on the Jak series, we thought "Oh, great, thats the end of the franchise, at least for you guys." After all, isn't that what you did with the crash Bandicoot series when you releases Crash Team Racing for the PS1 back in '99?
Hmm, but wasn't Crash also a superb Mario Kart-style racere that got just about everything right? Right. And now it seems you're doing the same thing with Jak X: Combat Racing-the preview build we play really impressed us.
Jak X begins with a story in which our hero, Jak, along with a few of his comrasdes, is poisoned at the reading of Jak II villian Krew's last will. Via hologram, Krew lays down this challenge: Jak and friends must when the Kras City Championship to get the antidote.
From there, Jak X looks to be a world-class racer: with a variety of customizable buggy-style vehicles, 24 tracks plus eight combat arenas (with support for up to six players online), and a fun choice of weapons and other power-ups (in the form of eco: green for missiles, red for mines, and blue for speed boosts, to name a few), this one seems to have it all. Car handling is terrific, providing a sense of speed and control reminiscent of Burnout.
NaughtyDog, if this really is the end of the Jak series as you head off into next-gen land, you're definitely ending it with flair. Jak X may be the racer we'll be looking forward to this fall.
