I can't get this great game to work on my pc with windows XP. Can anyone please tell about an update or something to make it work.....?!

I've just installed it on my pc with winXP (no service pack installed)and it runs perfectly... I remember I once installed a little compatibilityupgrade of about 2 Mb (which can be found on windowsupdate.com), don't know if it's the answer but why not try

I think the answer is on this site, I'm still loooking though. Alot to sift through to find a simple answer...Some cool xp stuff and links though to check out in the meantime.

I also am unable to play SS2 with XP pro. Before I patched it with the 5.2MB first patch I tried the final patch (2.1 MB)and the game seemed to run fine with the intro and the new game difficulty setting, after that though the screen exited to windows for a moment then all I got was a black screen.

Although its hard to say why some people are O.K with the game and some have problems it could point to a hardware problem.

The link below MAY help some people or at least be pushed in the right direction. SS2 dosent like alot of hardware I seem to rember.

I'm also having problems - but only after I've played 4 hours of it. Talk about frustrating! This has happened before with XP with other games. I've never been able to figure it out...

Ok guys... just in case you are still puzzled as to how u run SS2 on XP. I have W98se so it runs fine but i had to fix it for a friend.

1. If you have trouble installing the game on XP, go into DOS prompt and change to your CD drive.
then type: setup -lgntforce (try "-ntforce" if that doesn't work)

Now, after the game installs, it MAY still hang, so dont throw a party early! If the game runs but decides to lock up, head on over to: http://www.hollowbomb.com/html/sshock2
and try to download the XP patch. if you have any other probs, drop me a line.

Not to bring up something that's been dead for a while but I just thought I would give you a solution that worked for me....

if your game doesn't crash until after it loads (whereas it leaves you at a blank screen) hold the ctrl and alt button at the same time. I don't know if it will work for everyone, i don't even know why I did it it just seemed to work and I aint arguing. ... well got to go play again...

Hi this is how to solve the problem for all (where a black screen hangs when the game is loading):

1. Install Offical Patch:

2. Add The Windows XP Fixx:

http://www.hollowbomb.com/html/sshock2/shock2_xp_2000_fix.zip

3. Do this:

You will need to edit the shock.cfg file in the System Shock 2 folder on the hard drive. Open the shock.cfg file with notepad, and add the text "safe_texture_manager" on a line of its own. This change will become active when the file is saved.

And it should run fine

I seem to be having a different problem, my game loads fine, no black screen, but it locks up at random places, I tried all those things and it still didn't seen to fix it....any advice? Please! this is such a sweet game.

I am running XP Home and was having the problem of the game locking up inside the levels. I am running an Intel 3.2Ghz with Hyper Threading. Here is what I did to fix the problem.

1. Do a full install of the game.

2. Download and run the official Shkpatch patch, http://www.hollowbomb.com/html/sshock2/shkpatch.exe

3. Download and install the Windows XP fix from http://www.hollowbomb.com/html/sshock2/shock2_xp_2000_fix.zip

4. Add the line "safe_texture_manager", without quotes to the Shock.cfg file.

5. Start System Shock 2 and while still on the main menu, goto Task Manager.

6. Right-click on the Shock2.exe application and goto Set Affinity. Uncheck everything except for CPU 0.

7. Return to the game and play as normal.

I have now been playing without any lockups, etc.

I tried that, and got much farther than usual without locking up, but then as I went to search a body for a wrench, it locked up again....damn....I'm actually considering making my PC run dual operatinng systems just to get this game to run...

Now I keep seeing the DL for the XP patch and the offical update, but I'm having a different prob. I can't install the offical update so I can install the XP patch either, It says I need 1.15 befor I can install 2.3, I haven't play SS2 in a few months because it wouldn't play, wasn't till recently I found out you need a patch for XP. I have looked around everywhere and have exhusted all my resources and am writing this message very fustraded at 3:30 A.M.. Would some one please give me a link to the 1.15 patch. Thank you.

i'm trying to get the shock2.exe version 1.15 to see if I can install the patch that way, because it tells me I have v. 1.12

If I copy the shock2.exe from the xp/2k patch, the official upgrade tells me I have v. 2.3 installed, so it may work. If someone would email me this file, I would let you all know how it works.
