A number of reports were recently submitted to consumer game weblog Joystiq indicating that in-store Xbox 360 game kiosks, recently installed throughout the North American Wal-Mart department store chain ahead of the console's November 22 launch date, have been turned off. This was apparently due to problems arising from the Xbox 360's wireless controllers causing interference.

The reports cited Wal-Mart employees who claimed, perhaps over-zealously, that the system interfered with everything from the store's inventory control system, through its home electronics displays and its cash registers, all the way to the store's PA system.

An official statement released by Microsoft earlier today, however, claims to pinpoint the problem with the Xbox 360 kiosks. Wal-Mart's "network-based inventory management systems can be impacted by products using modern wireless signals,” a claim borne out by some of the Wal-Mart employees noting that other wireless devices, such as wireless phones, would accomplish the same thing. Microsoft has already addressed the problem, and "a solution to this issue was developed within 24 hours of identifying the issue and we are currently deploying the fix to the affected locations.”

The problem is unlikely to affect any home technology in the way that it caused problems at Wal-Mart, since the Xbox 360 has been certified by the FCC/ETSI for operation in the 2.4GHz band. No other devices with the certification will react negatively to the system's wireless output, though non-certified devices could be at risk.

I don't plan to play the system till I bring it home and set it up on my own HDTV.
Though some kiosks may have a small, quality display, standing and waiting to try out a game with a timer, isn't the ideal first time experience for me. I want a my first impression to be as good as it can be, since it will likely be quite long lasting. I don't want anything to mar my first experience playing the system, and nothing beats bringing a home a newly released system, several hours set aside and you and the console, one on one.

Thats exactly what I thought. Except for having the HDTV part.

Either way, at home you can absorb everything in your own comfort enviorment you set up for yourself. I think it's good to have kiosks to display the system to lure potential customers. Anyone set on getting the system though, or who's mind is already made up likely isn't going to miss anything not playing the kiosk.

I do not think I will get to play one anyways. None of these places have them around me. I will just wait.

It doesn't help that I am going to Chicago on November 22nd right after I pick up my 360. I hope I can hook it up at my Aunt's house. Although they would probably die from seeing how advanced today's graphics are.

Currently there are no kiosks in and English stores I have been too, which I am glad as then I would be intrigued to play or at least see people play them. But like you guys I love the excitement of just sitting down and playing it for a few hours to get to grips with the new pad, xbox and whatever games I have bought with it.

The first day I played it at Best Buy, a guy kept telling me waht to do. "Go right!" "Shoot that guy on the roof" "Do this..." I'd rather you shutup. But it didn't really bother me because I was tied into the game.

I'm surprised there haven't been any cases of people going nuts and trying to steal the 360's wired to the kiosks, hah. Just seems like something I wouldn't rule out, with so many die hard Xbox fans going crazy having the system right in front of them but not being able to own it.

i'd pay to see that.

I cant wait to get the 360 because ill play it on my 51 inch HDTV widescreen tv!!!!!!!!!!

My current TV is only 20 inches. But I'll soon be getting a 32 inch LCD.

In the mean time, I think I'll be driving to Mass this weekend so I can play one of the kiosks at the local Bellingham Wal-Mart (the closest Wal-Mart that has the kiosk).
