re: Population Problems

Firstly... There's a tutorial???

Secondly, the unhappy faces tend to come due to various reasons, such as lack of entertainment or resources that provide entertainment, maybe your constantly at war, or are dominated by other civs. All in all, you'll notice that you can change the amount of 'money' you spend on:
  1. Science
  2. Entertainment
  3. Wealth
I can't remember how, but you can basically go to some advisor screen where you can change how much since and wealth you want your civ to produce with a scale from 0 to 10 for both, where the total of both cannot exceed 10 (so if you have 10 for science, then wealth will = 0). If the total is less than 10, then the remainder is spent on entertainment, and this is what'll change the sad faces first into content citizens and then into happy citizens. There are also a number of buildings that you can build that'll help, such as Temples, which help to build culture, and thus help expand...

Being linked by a road to resources such as Wine is also a must for happy citizens, and if you're not linked to them, but are to another civ that's linked to them, you may want to trade it with the other civs.... it's small things such as these which can essentially effect whether or not your civs are content.

As for the income decreasing... well there are various things that effect how much you have outgoing and how much you have incoming... if you need more money, you may want to stop spending on Science/Entertainment and spend more on Wealth, but the obvious draw backs are that if you don't spend on science other civs may get ahead of you and then they may very well whoop your ass (it happens... too often in my case ). If your Civs unhappy, it may also flip and join another culturely dominant civ that's nearby, so essentially, all these little things will add up. You being the leader of the Civ, need to try and balance it all. Note that you may find it easier to change production to wealth when you really need it, though some buildings themselves may produce the wealth that you're missing.

Worst comes to worst, you can always cheat (which I must admit, is the first thing I do... I do love playing god when I have the biggest civ from the get go... )
