The map with icons on the HUD in one of those screenshots seems to indicate a free-roam layout.

It is indeed free roam. The overall city size is supposed to be smaller than in Spidey 2, but you get to break stuff.

I don't know for sure that Free Roam is confirmed, but I think it is a good bet that it is. I mean why would Activision go backwards, when the last game was free roam? It would be a huge let down if they made it linear after Spidey II was Free Roam.
