I'm betting that's from a cut scene-but I'm hoping it's not, how often do you get the chance to try and kick Wolverine's ass?

I strongly suspect that it'll just be a cameo in a cut scene, especially since X-men legends 2 is out at around the same time and I'm sure they don't want to overload the X-market. On the other hand, for those of you who are followers of Ultimate Spider Man, where is Spidey in his relations with the Xmen at this point in the comic story, I'm assuming he's met them? Maybe he calls in Wolvie for help tracking Venom down

re: General information thread

I beleive there is some active involvment between Spidey and Wolverine in the game, I read that on IGN somewhere, so maybe you fight him as Venom? Not sure about THIS stage (The Venom Arc) but the X-men have featured in Ultimate Spiderman.

I know the X-men (some of them at least) have cameoed in Spidey, but obsessive that I am I'm just wondering about continuity.

I wanted to post as much information as I did for Spidey 2. While I'm not a fan of the Ultimate line, this looks like the best representation of Spidey's world. Here is a selection of information from the new game:

Ultimate Spider-Man preview

-- September 2, 2005 by: Chris Remo

At a recent Activision press event, I had the chance to spend some time hands-on with Treyarch's upcoming Ultimate Spider-Man. Treyarch is the studio responsible for the previous two movie-based Spider-Man games, so the game is surely in capable hands. Unlike Spider-Man: The Movie and Spider-Man 2, however, this game really has nothing to do with Sam Raimi's well-received films--well, except for capitalizing on all the new Spidey fans they created. No, this game is based in just about every conceivable way on the Spider-Man of Marvel's current Ultimate line of comics, which starts fresh with various characters and retells their stories in a more modern context.

The first thing one notices about Ultimate Spider-Man is how it looks. Unlike so many games coming out these days, there is clearly a very specific artistic sentiment dictating the visuals, and it doesn't have much to do with "Uh, make it look realistic." The team has gone for a strongly comic book-like effect, but it's not cel-shaded. In most cases, the models do not use flat colors to imitate comics; rather, the effect comes from careful color design and heavy black outlines that look like inking. Overall it's a very successful approach and is a pleasure to watch. Nowhere is this more the case than in the game's well-constructed cutscenes. The writer and main artist of Marvel's Ultimate Spider-Man series, fan favorite Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley respectively, worked with Treyarch on the story and artistic elements of the game, and it shows. I must admit I've never been huge on the writing and art style in mainstream superhero comics, but the goal here is clearly authenticity and that has surely been achieved. The cutscenes are designed to look like actual comic book pages in motion. They are a fantastic blend of animation and still-shots, with characters constrained to frames or breaking out of them fluidly depending on the situation, and the layout of the panels is constantly shifting. This type of thing has been done in both games and film before, but Treyarch's interpretation is one of the best I've seen, no doubt in some part thanks to the involvement of Bendis (who, I believe, often does the panel layouts in the comics he writes). There are a few instances when there isn't enough action on the screen to really justify all of the panels-within-panels and so forth, but that's an extremely minor point.

If you've played Treyarch's previous Spider-Man games (or even Neversoft's effort on PS1/N64/DC) you should already have a pretty good idea of what to expect from the actual gameplay. Basically, you play Spider-Man, swinging around New York City beating up bad guys and getting into battles with Marvel villains (for those who are interested in this sort of thing, an Activision rep was sure to inform me that this game contains more Marvel villains than any other Spider-Man video game--"Even more than [Spider-Man & Venom:] Maximum Carnage" for SNES and Genesis). The web-swinging mechanics are tight and forgiving--Treyarch seems to have taken the approach that even if the player has no idea what he's doing, the game should make him feel like he does. It's a good angle to take, since a game like this is going to appeal to such a broad spectrum of gamers. I had the chance to play some later levels in the game, however, and the difficulty definitely ramps up. There are also a series of time-trial "trick races" scattered throughout the game which have the player running through the city on a checkpoint-based route, trying to achieve the best time while perfecting the skills necessary to do so. For some reason, I was informed at least twice that these trials were designed by a man named Hans.

That's what you do when you're Spider-Man, anyway. As you probably know, one of the biggest draws of Ultimate Spider-Man is that classic Spidey villain Venom is a playable character. He's not just an unlockable bonus or anything either--his missions make up about 50% of the game's story. Playing as Venom is a very different experience than playing as Spider-Man. The best comparison I can draw would be to playing The Hulk in Radical's recently-released The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. There's no web-slinging with Venom, he just jumps really, really far. Playing him gives you much more of a "drunk with power" effect than you get playing Spider-Man; he can toss cars around with ease, his jumps can reach the tops of buildings, and the ground shakes and cracks when he lands. Basically, he's solid. Except for the fact that he kind of just erodes over time. In addition to the obvious damage he takes from gunfire and whatever else his enemies can throw at him, Venom's health bar steadily declines over time and he must feed on humans to rejuvenate it. The result is that the sites of Venom's battles end up being a city block of car crashes and dessicated corpses.

Even stronger than the sensation of switching from Spidey to Venom was the transition back again. It was startling how elegant and controlled Spider-Man's movement is, and how fragile his frame, compared to Venom's animal leaping and pounding. It's a well-executed juxtaposition that drives home the differences between the two characters.

Overall, Ultimate Spider-Man is shaping up quite well. It feels much more comic-inspired than the previous Spider-Man games, from the visuals to the cutscenes to Spidey's trademark one-liners sprinkled liberally throughout. From what I played, it's hard to tell whether the game will suffer from the same downfall as its predecessors, which is that going around doing a bunch of missions comprised of beating people up eventually just gets kind of tiring, but Treyarch has certainly thrown a lot of new elements into the mix even if they haven't exactly reinvented it. Keep an eye on this one if you enjoyed the other games or if you just like Spider-Man. Or, you know, if you want to play as a big hulking purple beast thing.

Boss Battle Spoilers *You have been warned*

Hope this is appeciated as I have had a total mare getting this from ign.com, as it has kept closing my browser windows:

Credit to ign.com

September 7, 2005 - Activision dropped by the IGN offices recently to give us a lengthy hands-on demo with the latest build of Ultimate Spider-Man. But it wasn't just any demo, oh no. It revolved around a key aspect of the game, namely boss battles. We actually spent the better part of two hours this morning beating the crap out of five bone-crunching super-villains. Unfortunately for you, dear readers, Activision is only letting us tell you about three of them.

Still better than the last time folks from Activision and Treyarch dropped by the office. The last time we saw Ultimate Spider-Man, we were prohibited from even touching the controller. Every time our fingers inched toward a nearby controller, for example, Activision representatives would brutally slap our hands away and nod their heads in collective admonition. But that's all in the past. As a means to make up for their brutish behavior, we received an Ultimate Spider-Man all access pass.

These three boss characters, Goblin, Beetle and Rhino, offered a groovy sampling of what to expect from the rest of the encounters. But for those who know next to nothing about Ultimate Spider-Man, here's a brief introduction. It's basically a retelling of the original Spider-Man, only pumped full of pop-culture references and sporting new super-slick character design. Everyone from Rhino and Goblin to Spidey himself benefit from a fresh layer of cool.

What this means for videogames fans is that Ultimate Spider-Man sports a similar aesthetic. It looks (and plays) radically different from Spider-Man 2, for example. And the new source material definitely plays a part in this change.

But we're getting off topic. Back to the boss fights.

Below, IGN's awesome PSP editor Juan Castro and slightly less-awesome Comics editor Hillary Goldstein recount a few hours knee-deep in digital carnage.

Wolverine Boss Fight

Yes, it's not a typical boss fight by any stretch. But honestly, tutorials don't come much cooler than this. That's right; players actually fight Wolverine during one of Ultimate Spider-Man's many tutorial segments. Not that it makes things any less cool. The fight actually takes place early in the game when playing as Venom. After learning how to navigate the city and feed on helpless civilians (to regain health) we found ourselves outside a seedy bar. Outside this bar stood a motorcycle which we gleefully chucked through the bar window as part of the tutorial.

Unbeknownst to us, this wasn't just any motorcycle. Hell, it wasn't just any old bar, either. Inside the bar stood the perpetually pissed Wolverine. As everyone knows, Wolverine hates it when someone interrupts one of his marathon beer sessions, so a fight quickly ensued. Since the encounter takes place early in the game it wasn't all that hard. But that didn't make it any less cool. Defeating Wolverine requires careful navigation of the bar while avoiding his short-range attacks. The trick here is to get in a few hits then jump away just as he's about to counter you. Repeat the process and Wolverine should go down without much trouble.

Shocker Boss Fight

In the USM comics, Shocker is a bit of a joke. When Spidey first ran into him, he broke the poor guy's nose, which led to his release -- apparently the Webhead violated this villains rights. Shocker is a joke once more. Armed with a pair of vibro-guns and out of the ridiculous costume seen in the regular Marvel Uni, the Shocker is one of Spidey's first foes in the game. He can be beaten in about 30 seconds.

Used as a training tool to teach you some basic moves, you'll need to web up Shocker's hands (so that he zaps himself), dodge when your Spidey Sense tingles (noted with jagged lines above the noggin) and finish Shocker off with a good one-two combo. Piece o' cake.

Silver Sable Boss Fight

Three quarters through the game we faced Silver Sable, a sultry mercenary with ties to Venom. This fight spans three separate phases, each of which puts Venom's abilities as a diehard combatant to the test. Things start easily at first. Sable uses a number of attack combos, most of which are short-range and easy to avoid using Venom's leap ability. A few tentacle slaps and Sable goes down. She then tires of playing nice and unleashes a horde of mercenaries. They attack using a combination of long-range projectiles such as missiles and also use standard issue machine guns. This part isn't too difficult; just hop around each of the mercs and pick them off one by one.

But then things heat up rather quickly.

Two attack helicopters descend from the heavens and begin unloading an ungodly amount of firepower. This sequence reminded us of The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, in that survival required the speedy and careful navigation of the surrounding landscape. Not only did we swing through the environment using our tentacles, but we also had to drop down to ground level and consume civilians when our health dipped below safe levels. Add to this the mercenaries on the ground (who were also shooting at us) and things got hairy pretty damn fast.

Every phase of the Silver Sable boss fight required us to kill a specific number of mercenaries before we could proceed with the mission. So, while we could have attacked the helicopters (by picking up nearby cars and hurling them) we chose to evade them and quickly take down the mercenaries instead. Eventually we killed enough mercs to initiate an ending cinematic which sees Venom jump onto Sable's hovercraft in a last ditch effort to bring her down. Unfortunately, she outsmarts him and plunges him into the sea below.

Is Sable really a villian? She's a mercenary... I'd think that's more 'neutral'.
