Can't even get it started - I just get the Windows message "Half-Life 2 has encountered a problem and needs to close..." - But it hasn't even opened! The details mentions "ModName: shaderadidx9.dll" . Something to do with DirectX 9? but I have reinstalled DX( to no avail, and checked for Nvidia driver updates;(. HL-2, Lost Coast and 'Substance Gold all run OK on this computer under Win XP, with a 7600GS graphics card. - Any suggestions?

Try this, right click on EP1 in Steam, then go properties, local files, defrag the game files then verify them.
