iPod and iPhone Rules, index, repos and other useful links

Welcome to the Neoseeker iPod forum. This topic is for those who are just visiting, lurking, or are members. It has some rules in addition to the Forumwide Rules of Conduct, Etiquette and Acceptable Behavior as well as some important links.

Moderated By:

The Slayer

First off here are the additional rules. Please refer to this page for the Forumwide rules if you haven't already.
  • No Free iPod Sites
Free iPod sites are not tolerated at all. If a member or a guest posts one of these, either as a topic or a reply to a topic, his or her post privileges will be revoked in this forum. Please do not follow links in these topics as they just encourage spammers to do continue posting them. 99% of the time these topics are scams but the ones that actually do work sell the information they gather from you to advertisers resulting in telemarketers, email spam, and junk mail.

  • No Advertising
Making a topic dedicated to a website you made, shareware, etc. is considered advertising. Tutorials (such as DVD to iPod) are also no longer allowed due to past abuses. Also, linking to shareware programs when a member is not looking for shareware is not allowed either. For example if a member is looking for converting software it is ok to link to shareware. If a member isn't asking for software then linking to shareware isn't allowed. Once again this is due to past abuses of guests and members who would flood the forum with shareware links regardless if a member was looking for it.

  • No linking to executables
This tends to be a problem with those who break the "No DVD to iPod topics" rule. Linking directly to a download rather than the download page is not allowed. This means that if I click on a link I am not prompted to download a file. The main reason for this is that I don't want someone to click on a link and get something bad on their computer. I will remove any links that break this rule although I probably won't ban someone unless they break another rule in the process.

  • Posting in SPAM topics
Don't do it. Those who post in SPAM topics only contribute to the SPAM. Those who post in SPAM topics (especially to make more SPAM) are also eligible for banning. If you see a spam topic, leave it alone or report it. You can only report it if you are a member using the report button(). If it is obviously a SPAM topic then remove from view if possible. If you aren't sure then just report the post without removing it from the view. If it is SPAM I (or a supermoderator) will delete it. If not I'll send you a PM explaining to you why the topic wasn't SPAM. Don't abuse the report feature. If you do I'll contact the administration to have your reporting privileges revoked.

  • Piracy
We've been having problems with this one even though I thought everyone should have known that this is not allowed. Discussion of illegally downloading songs, admitting that you illegally download songs, etc. is not allowed. Posts mentioning piracy will be deleted and those who discussing it will be banned. No warnings, no second chances, just banned. Also not allowed is discussion of illegally removing DRM schemes.

  • New Members and Guests
Due to frequent advertisements from guests and new members, I have enabled some stricter rules for these people. If you are posting as a Guest (ie, not loged in as an account) you can not start a new thread and you may only make 3 posts per day. Under no circumstance will guests and members who have joined in the past 2 weeks and/or have less than 25 posts be allowed to advertise, recommend or suggest any app (free or not) or product for the iphone or ipod. This will hopefully help stop people from joining just to advertise an app they have made to get more people to buy or download it. If anyone breaks this rule, their post will be treated as an advertisement and their post will be removed and the member possibly permanently banned from this site for advertising.

Amendment to this rule as of December 17th: Due to massive advertising from guests, guest posting has been disabled in this forum. If you wish to make a thread or a post you will have to register (which is free!). Sorry for the inconvenience .

If you have any complaints about this rule, please send me a private message.

If you have any questions regarding the rules or anything going on in this forum, feel free to send me a private message.

Apple Links

This post contains a list of important or helpful pages from Apple for iTunes and the iPod. If you have any useful links that you think should be added, just PM them to me and if I think they're good I add them to the list.

-----------Instructions/Tutorials-----------

iTunes Homepage
You'll need this program to sync to your iPod. It's free to use. It also has a store that you can buy music and videos from. You can also subscribe to podcasts via iTunes. This is also where you update your iPod (firmware updates).

iTunes Tutorial

This page gives you instructions to help you with using iTunes with your iPod. This is the first tutorial you should see unless you already know how to sync via iTunes.

iPod Tutorial
This page is for those of you who just got an iPod or are having trouble figuring out how to use your iPod.

Beyond the Basics Tutorial
This page teaches you some other functions that, while not necessary for enjoyment of your iPod, can be very helpful.

iPod User Manuals
If you threw yours away or lost it you can download a copy of it here.

--------------Troubleshooting--------------

iPod Support
If you are having problems with your iPod this is a good place to look for solutions for your problem. Make note of any icons or error codes you have.

The Five R's
Apples default response to all iPod issues. To be honest restoring may be a bit drastic in most situations so if the other four R's don't help you should post your question in the forum.

iPod Iconology
If you are having problems with your iPod and an icon pops up you should check to see what this page says about it.

iTunes Connection Diagnostic
iTunes 7 has the ability to run a diagnostic on the connection to your iPod. This does not diagnose problems with the iPod hardware or software.

Maximize Battery Life
This page gives you tips on maximizing your iPod's battery life.

Other iPod Software

This post links to software that is helpful or can be used to extend functionality. If you have links to some useful software PM them to me and I'll post them if they're good.

Operating Systems

iPod Linux
iPod Linux will enable you to play ogg audio files, install games, and record better quality audio on your iPod. Compatibility varies between generations so you should check to see what features work with which iPod before installing.

Rockbox
Not just for iPods, Rockbox can greatly expand the number of audio file types your iPod can play.

Audio/Video Converters

3GP Converter
This free software converts video formats. One of the options is to convert to iPod video. Note that you'll need to change the language as it is in japanese.

Videora iPod Converter
Another freeware program that can convert Video to iPod.

XviD4PSP
Can import an export many file types including iPod video format.

iPod Managment

YamiPod - Yet Another iPod Manager
A program that doesn't need installation as it can be run from your iPod. Has features such copying music to and from iPod, remove duplicated tracks, find lost music files, etc.

Alternatives to iTunes for iPods

Audion(Mac Only)
It's no longer being developed so it's provided as is. It was shareware, but now the license key is provided free of charge.

EphPod(Windows and Linux)
May not be compatible with newer iPods

gtkpod(Linux Only)
Currently I have no information about gtkpod

Media Monkey(Windows Only)
While I normally won't post shareware, there is a free version of this program that supports iPod syncing.

Winamp(Windows Only)
Also shareware with a free version, iPod syncing is supported.

Songbird
Supports iPod with an extension.

Winamp
Supports iPod with a Plugin.
