Boomstick was better.
|
I picked this game up today for 15 bucks, and I really havent seen a whole lot that makes me like this one over Fistful of Boomstick.
For starters, theres no ammo count for the weapons. You just blast away, infinite ammo, with no option to switch ammo types like in Boomstick. The whole infinite ammo thing just doesnt sit well with me at all. Moreover, the shotgun fires WAY too fast. Boomstick had a nice fire rate, and reload time. In this game, you dont even seem to reload the shotgun before you can fire again. The targetting controls have been changed, so no more of that over the shoulder shotgunning action can be done. I saw it once in a finish move, but as for regular targetting, you can only target what is in front of you.
No spellbook for various spells either. Evil Ash is pretty cool, but come on, it will get old pretty quick.
Save points instead of save tokens is another change for the worse. From what Ive seen, the levels arent very long, but it does suck when you suddenly have to stop playing the game, and you have to lose your progress because you cant save at any time, and cant take the time to try to finish the level or find a save location.
No health packs to help get you out of a jam sucks as well. Now it seems that deadites drop small orbs of health and rage whenever you stylishly kill one of them, so you have to rebuild your health on the fly, and pray that someone drops some life if youre in a jam.
The Sam character is just annoying. I like Ted Raimi and everything, but man, the constant yapping of the Sam character just really got on my nerves, and Im not even through playing the game yet. I thought it was funny killing him a few times, but that quickly wore off. I dont like having to constantly switch over to him, nor have to use the clunky targetting control system to try to kick him towards deadites that I somehow cannot kill without his help.
I really dislike the fact that you depend so heavily on this half-deadite midget. In Boomstick, Ash laid waste to deadites much stronger than the enemies in this game, but somehow these deadites are able to block his chainsaw and shotgun attacks, but are somehow, miraculously vulnerable to a half dead midget gnawing on their leg or tearing off their head.
I admit that I have not finished the game, and so cannot pass a fully accurate judgement on the game just yet. Ive gotten the harpoon upgrade and Im progressing through the mine level. However I can say that so far, its really just not as much fun to play this time around as Boomstick was.
The finish moves are pretty neat, and the addition of the dodge/roll movement abilities are nice, but overall I think they should have stuck with what Boomstick brought to the table.
Different upgradable weapons and ammo types, spells, and Ash laying waste to every deadite in his path. Not the halfassed puzzles and Sam sequences to progress through the levels.
Overall, I think the Evil Dead series took a step backward with this game, from what I have seen so far. Fistful of Boomstick was much more fun to play than what this one is so far.

I finished the game today, and my initial judgement stands. This game falls short of Boomstick in almost every way.
Very few weapons, especially when compared to the amount of weapons in the first game. Pistol, Shotgun, and an explosive launcher for firearms, and a chainsaw, harpoon, and flamethrower for the right arm weapon.
No thrown explosives, no melee weapons, no variable ammo types or upgrades.
No alternate game modes either. You get a level select, but no arcade mode or any other side stuff like in the last game. Its like the guys at THQ just really didnt give a shit about it and just threw it together to make a buck off of the Evil Dead name.
And how about that ridiculously stupid ending? Boomstick had a pretty cool ending that also left it open for another story, but you get some resolution.
This game just rips you off at the end of it. Youre waiting for the next scene to roll, but you see credits instead.
Basicly, the only thing worth a damn in this game is the voiceovers by Bruce campbell, and the finishing moves and dodge abilities. The rest is trash.

I agree with every term, stinger. FFOB was way better. Regeneration was just way too easy and short. FFOB took me a lot logner with all it's puzzles ect. If there is a possibility for another installment, it sure as hell better beat all the Evil Dead games by far!
