re: Is It True That All The Fatal Frame Series Are True Stories??

No, they're not true.

The only parts that are based off reality are the stories of Japanese rituals, and old folk tales.
And I's pretty sure the Himuro Mansion was also based off a real house.

Well, who knows? Maybe they are....maybe not? All I know is that this game is really cool. You know, I'm a huge fan of Haunting Ground - - if you know it? - It's made by Capcom (the creators of the famous Resident Evil series).

If the stories were true, rural Japan would be at the bottom of my vacation wishlist... right down there with anywhere in South America other than Buenos Aires.

I doubt it. I think they only said it was based on a true story just to get you scared when you actually do play the game. But, it could be based on a true story. Well...
...some of it could be.

I know Tecmo got in trouble for advertising FF1 as based on a true story, but I think they later said that there was never a place called Himuro mansion - saying it was based on reality just made it more terrifying

No way!
it's not a real story at all.

maybe it was/is a real house.
but since it's computerized.
we don't know.

Okay, I do believe some facts such as the folklore notes and such may be true, others may not, and I would really like to visit the mansion mentioned in the link kidazn gave to see what happened there, with an old camera in hand, of course, one never knows if it really works...

re: Is It True That All The Fatal Frame Series Are True Stories??

Did a bit of research, and found this ...

quote
What TECMO® has said concerning the Himuro Mansion
(quote by Makoto Shibata, Chief Producer of Fatal Frame):
In an area outside Tokyo, there lies a mansion in which it's said seven people were murdered in a grisly manner. On the same property, there lie three detached residences that surround the mansion, all of which are rumored to have ties to the mansion's troubled past. It's said there is an underground network of tunnels that lay beneath the premises, but nobody knows who made these tunnels or what purpose they served. Many inexplicable phenomenon have been reported occurring on the property. Bloody handprints have been found splattered all over the walls. Spirits have been spotted on the premises… even in broad daylight. A narrow stairway leads to an attic where a spirit-sealed talisman is rumored to be locked away. Men have sought this talisman, only to be found later with their bodies broken and rope marks around their wrists. There's a crumbling old statue of a woman in a kimono, but its head is missing. If you take a photo of a certain window, a young girl can be seen in the developed picture. These incidents have provoked fear in the people of Tokyo, and many believe that those who live near this area will become cursed. The deaths of those seven people are unexplained to this day."
That's the best explanation you're going to get from the makers.

It's also interesting to note that cameraslens said the Japanese version of the game never had the tagline: "Based on a true story". Sounds like a case of the publishers trying to make the game sound more exciting by saying it's based on a true story.

Hmm ... I'm not sure what's happened there. It looks like Emi has taken the page down.
