I did this with a few friends who also play the game and we got into some really interesting conversations (made all the more interesting because videogames don't usually sprout good conversations)
The question is: Which is your favorite ghost in the series?
Criteria: Anything. You can pick the scariest one, the one with the best backstory, the one who is better-conceived than all the rest, the one who died the most interesting death, etc.
My answer: I'm torn between Kyouka (Woman With Brush) for how she pulled out her hair and kept combing it and pulled it out again waiting for her lover, and how she is so desperate to see him that when you show up with his camera she tries to force you to stay with her.
The other would be the female Engravers (Needle Woman) because she's hands down the scariest-looking ghost I've seen in my life. Think: She has rope coming out of her eyes (read: she's blind) and needles going through her hands just because she wanted to know what the holly/snake tattoo felt like. Wouldn't you think someone like that is most likely a psychopath?

i actually like the little shrine maidens a lot. they float around! yeah, i know, it's lame...but hey! hisame (the long haired one) is my fave though. i have a thing for cute little girls with long hair, like hisame, or samara/sadako from the ring.

The ghost you encounter in the courtyard with the tree tied with red paper dolls (?) - I mean the priest who wields a butchers knife and moves so fast it's impossible to get away from him most of the time

He's my favourite in a scary way but he's probably the one who's left a lasting impression *Shudders*

if it was out of the whole series however, i'd probably go for the kiryu twins from PZ2

Masumi and Miyako are my favorite ghosts, as you can probably tell from my banner. XD.
I loved their story. I think I sympathise most with their characters because they were unknowingly caught up in FF2's events, and had nothing to fight back with. They just wanted to find each other, and escape ... but they didn't make it.
That story in itself could be made into a FF game (though I suppose that it wouldn't work since they couldn't actually fight the ghosts).

I also like Kirie and the Kusabi. They just rawk.

Fighting Masumi-kun and Miyako-chan at the same time is a pain in the butt though, especially in Nightmare Mode. I can handle just one of em, but when they both lunge out of two different walls at the same time, it's hard to get a shot of one of them without the other blind-siding you!

Brushing Woman is my favorite of the combat ghosts. She makes my day when I encounter her.

*rises hand* Oh, mine too! Aside from the Rope Man, that's the only ghost that I was able (or wanted) to take a sharp close-up picture. I've got to properly place them on my computer, but I think you can see her smiling if she gets close enough (except from where she desperately tries to grab you, then her face has a somewhat of a psycho look). Too bad it wasn't a Fatal Frame, but the option to save your photos in a Memory Card after a game over really made it worth it.

Oh, I said it before, but I also like the Rope Men. They're so creepy especially when

Also it's one of the few ghosts I shot them at close up. This one wasn't a Fatal Frame neither, but it worth it again and was a sharp photo.

EDIT: Well, maybe also the handmaidens, but when I had to deal with three at the same time they showed once again how usless a stake can be as a weapon if the user is lethargic...

Haha, that's true. Though I did enjoy the challenge, especially considering it was in such a small room.
I don't know if it was intentional on Tecmo's part, but I liked that the Miyako and Masumi's AI seemed alot smarter than the other ghosts and that they worked together to defeat Mio. That is definitely something that needs to appear more in future Fatal Frame games, because some ghosts seem to have no method to killing you.
