are they bronze, silver, gold and a sort of black coloured one with a symbol on it?

As best as I can tell, the color of the coins (from bronze to skulls) determines the quality of the equipment for the fight.
The number of coins (1 to 4) determines the relative difficulty and health of the opponents. The color also vicariously affects the difficulty as better equipment on your opponents means they do more damage to you if you get hit. | |

The color is the rank you need to be (bronze low class, silver mid class, gold high class and skull master class) and number is supposed to be difficulty or the reward compared to a normal battle of this type
