Armored Core: Sagas (roleplaying information thread 4)
|
Previous Threads: 1 - 2 - 3.
Original Concept before anyone asks, the title is work in progress, it's late and I hadn't yet decided on a name for the bunch of ideas I am about to explain. That aside, welcome to the latest innovation to form, more or less, in my mind Sagas will begin, once a few players are up for it, like most RPs. I will run it and set out a few missions, plus manage a story arc which the players may influence and interact with. The key difference is my first happy creation, the Chapter system. Rather than running the RP from beginning to end, I will simply lay down a template situation, a premises, and then control events to generate a series of missions and decent plot for people to enjoy. However, I will not run this to a grand conclusion, instead, I will keep events at a moderate level and bring them to something of a close, but still leave things up in the air. This is the underlying principle of the chapter system. Anyone who has played an AC game much will be familiar with the side-arcs that come and go in the games, disorder units, biological weapons, various other things. Basically some event, discovery, or just key point of the power struggles that go on everyday lead to you, the player, doing several missions and influencing the tide of events. This is how the chapter system works. I'll kick off the opening chapter, in which say, perhaps a new terrorist faction will arise, or a powerful rogue Raven will get a serious price on their head and start troubling the corporations, or some facility or other will be come a hotly-contested battlefield. I'll run this arc through a few missions, say 4-7 (though we can scale up and down depending on participation) with the choices of the players influencing the outcome. At the end of the chapter, the hope is that while things won't all be wrapped up in a perfectly neat little package, basically things will have reached a mile stone, or found a balance of sorts or something. That will be the end of the first chapter, after which, we may launch into the second chapter. With any luck, I won't run this, rather, one of the other RPers will step up to share with us their ideas for events to put us through. My hope is that this will allow people to take turns bringing their own twists to the evolving story, while at all times being able to develop their own characters through the ideas of others and having a say in what happens through the choices of their characters. Also, the chapter system will make for much smaller RP "instalments" then we usually go for, which basically allows people to join in without fear of being bogged down into a major commitment. Of course people can still drop out if they must, you're not literally signing contracts here, but should you find yourself unexpectedly otherwise busy, then the fairly frequent breaks between chapters should offer plenty of chances for people to drop out for a bit or join in. It's not a rigid rule, but rather a way to accommodate the coming and going we all do that can and has killed RPs before more fluidly. If you have to go, you have to go, but hopefully if it's not urgent, you can stick it out for a couple of weeks maybe, and see through to the chapter end. Likewise if you want to join, you can hopefully only wait a little while before doing so on fairly equal footing as you and everyone else face a new chapter together. Anyway, I think people all the get chapter idea, basically I want to take things to a time when Ravens weren't always heroes but mercenaries with a choice, who could really change the course of things because they were powerful, and wouldn't be up in some good verses evil war where the choice isn't really a choice at all, but rather in common yet serious disputes where the world won't end no matter what they do, and they can choose the side that'll benefit them most, perhaps those who pay the highest even, good old-fashioned Raven work Domains are rather simpler, but something I feel that will help Sagas greatly. The simple idea is this, our RP world will be set in one certain region, perhaps a city, or two nearby cities, and the surrounding area. This region might even have a local arena, but what it will certainly have is its own balance of power between factions, so that even perhaps the biggest corporation on the planet might be an underdog locally, their resources are spread out after all and by hook or by crook despite their overall power, the local branch, so to speak, is a ways down the pecking order. The idea behind domains is simple, it allows us to have a nice, diverse but finite world to operate in, we don't need to worry about the world economy or planet-wide wars, none of that, we can just focus on getting paid to settle disputes Raven-style. A domain could be, say, a city, like one of the many we've fought in before in the games, as well as surrounding areas, with maybe some power stations, a space port, a secret research facility, something long forgotten buried out there somewhere, regional corporate headquarters, residential areas, and so on. So there's plenty of room to play and create, but it just gives us some perspective to work in. One reason I want to use this idea is if people drop out of the RP for a while, then come back later and rejoin, rather than the tedious catch-up that makes people shun from coming back at all, they could just say their character went to work in another city or place or something for a while, and they can return quite naturally with only vague ideas of what's going on, word of mouth or big news maybe. Of course you'll need to have the general gist of changes, but it allows you to wander back in, get an in-a-nutshell and get right back to RPing, rather then having to memorise 37 pages of plot development first. Also, should the RP prove popular, just if, I'm all for people founding new domains, they'd get a separate thread and people could move between the two, sign up to one, maybe transfer to another between chapters if they liked, whatever, there could even be domain-wars, if we're feeling special, who knows? My point is we can still have the epic tales we've spun in the past before, but we're not held to that standard, rather just a few of use, 4, 5 maybe, can enjoy battling through original scenarios and influencing the outcome of meaningful but not all-world-ending situations, taking turns as chapter master to add our own parts to the world we live in, and should we all be for it, we could really do something epic, some fate of the world stuff, if people like. However, I don't know about you people, but I enjoy the epic climaxes of the games much more for having fought through plenty of more common but still awesome battles and conflicts first, many just the day to day attrition of Raven life whether or not great machinations threaten the world behind closed doors. This is a design made to allow for enjoyable, engaging, but casual role play, letting us all supply and influence interesting events and stories without feeling that burden of the need to always go one better, maintain some huge, grand yet most likely cumbersome story arc and basically, the kind of thing that kills most RPs, that feeling of over-extending yourself. I hope that like this, we can all write fun stories together, and build up both a fleshed-out, detailed and interesting world and history, and also a lot of good times and memories, ones that we can leave for a while if we feel like it or have other things to do, and come back to when we want to and can. We can even take a break all together between chapters, say, I don't mind, basically, it's about fun I can type a lot can't I *woot, huge posts are uber. Changed the thread title- confused me for a 'game info' thread. (As in actual console game) This message was edited by raijin1999(moderator) on Oct 10 2006. RP Overview This is a formal explanation of the above ideas organised into a final working model. Armored Core Sages (ACS) is a rope play system made to give fans of the series a canvas to write collaborative stories together, developing characters and taking turns introducing their own major twists to the ongoing story. Detailed Sheet Real Name: Character's certificate of birth sort of name, although your character can still use an alias if you wish. Pilot Name (Optional): Raven handle, if you want to have a separate one from your real name. Core Name: The name of your AC. Head: Everything from here down to the emblem are optional, if you don't want to fill out a specific AC design, use the simple sheet coming after this. Core: Arms: Legs: Boosters: FCS: Generator: Radiator: Inside: Extension: Right Back Unit: Left Back Unit: Right Arm Unit: Left Arm Unit: AP: Optional Parts (total slots/used slots): Name followed by number of slots used (in brackets) with comma to separate to the next part, like so. Also no OP-I unless I specifically give permission, there will be special rules guarding the use of that part. Colour Scheme: Red Value/Blue Value/Green value with comma to indicate moving onto next area, like so, and parts the colour effects (in brackets, if not a general colour scheme). Emblem: Description or image both welcome. Profile: All that history stuff that makes a character, may be updated to reflect RP events at player discretion.
Simple Sheet Real Name: "" Pilot Name: "" Core Name: "" Core Description: A general idea of parts and colour scheme, such as leg and core type, general weight class and weapons (official Silent Line garage parts ONLY, although you don't have to do them by name, or even have an exact model in mind, just make it something that could more or less be made in the game). Emblem: "" Profile: "" Miscellaneous: Anything not covered above you wish to add, you can put in some additional fields if you like even.

OK, the new thread is up and we're still going strong
In reply to JG's, hehehe, request, sorry about the delay, I just had that mad crunch leading up to the 8th. Also I was giving akeles a chance to post since I hope to get stuff moving with mine and wouldn't want to force him to re-write half of it. How's it coming along akeles -------------------

My internet has been kinda sketchy these past few days, so I've been off and on. Still kinda trying to figure how i'm going to go with this, but it'll come to me soon, I'm sure.

Sketchy internet connection does not effect word processing programs.
Thanks for playing, try again next time. For reals, I really think that you, Fyre, should post. Everybody else is a bit unsure of where to take this. I don't want to return to base camp late and speak for other peoples actions and I'm sure akeles feels somewhat the same. JG can't launch his little side quest until we're all back and this next mission wave is covered so... I hate to direct the pressure to ya' bud but, I think it's time for some steering again. -------------------

quote Grenade KingI realize that, lol. Just I find myself referring back to previous posts to direct my next ones. That's my problem, lol. I mean I get the gist of it all. I get rescued by Sythe, and we retreat to a regrouping point or something of that nature, I guess. It's just that after that part, I'm kinda' lost. =[ ------------------- And More than this I Wish, You Could Have Seen My Face...

Just cover that part then. Detail your rescue and leave it off with you arriving back at base or something. Just write some characterization and such, a couple paragraphs at most. Like I said before, I think we're all a bit lost here on this. We need guidance. Help us Fyre!

OK, I'm pretty much out the woods on deadlines, the dark bit of the woods anyway. So, akeles, do you want me to go ahead and post? I don't wanna do that without asking you cus it seems mean to just cut in and do things that might force to you rewrite stuff, but if you don't mind or want me to, maybe I could help give direction to things, then just say, I'll go for it
Edit: OK, I didn't manage an actual post today, for which I apologise, sorry guys This message was edited by Fyrestorm on Jan 14 2009. -------------------
