I've seen a video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9rdd2xG8DA&search=dead%20rising) of dead rising and i've noticed some of the shops are barred, is all of the shops barred at the start? Do you need to unlock new shops?

i think they are all barred up in the beginning cause if u ever notice in other games, dunno forgot which ones, there is areas blocked off so you wont wander off from the main quest or somthing like that and get lost. i think its all locked so it can do wat that they want from you, like how that guy wants you to get stuff to block the door with.

no i think later on in the game you do some kind of main quest mission that unlocks them all.like you look for some circuit breakers and hook them up that kind of thing. i think the janitor who gives you the side missions and stuff ( or that old guy ) ( the guy who rings you on the cell phone ) tells you to do the quest to open up chances of survival.

if the doors are bloked off in that video mabye its later on in the game like if he were trying to build a baracade

The boarded up shops are probably from the beginning of the game, when the zombies first "invade" the mall or maybe the ones in North Plaza that are under construction???

Almost all of the shops become available after the opening mission and first gamesave in the security office. However, not all areas of the mall are available right away; like any other free roam game you have to do some missions to unlock new areas. But pretty much once you have access to an area of the mall, the shops in that area are available as well.

All of the shops are opened after you encounter Brad for the first time and escape back to the security room.

That's not entirely true. Luvs Books and the Paradise Plaza route to the Entrance Plaza remain sealed until helping Brad for a second time.
