Is this game worth buying? |
|
I'm thinking of buying this game while waiting for '09. I was wondering, is it worth the money? I've read several reviews that it's a piece of crap with no create a wrestler and glitchy gameplay.
But could someone give me the pros of this game? I saw this game got a 6 out of 10 from Gamespot, so that would mean this still has a little light in it. What are these? From the videos I've seen the animation is very smooth! It's as if I'm watching the show itself! How big is the roster? Is the story mode any better than the WWE games'? How is the gameplay?

No. I wouldn't really say it's worth the $50 (or $60) to buy. I haven't played it yet, myself, but some guy was broadcasting this game live the day it came out, and I manged to get a good idea of it.
For starters, the storyline looks very fun. On the downside, if you played Day of Reckoning for the GameCube and didn't like it, than odds are you will not like TNA's storyline. You have to create a wrestler to start things off, and in order to progress in the storyline, you have to defeat everyone. No continuing if you lose. Once you get further in the storyline, it looks like it gets harder. It will probably take you a few tries to defeat Kurt Angle, and Samoa Joe, and Jeff Jarrett. It almost has a RPG-style of rewards to it. As you progress through the storyline, you unlock new moves for your wrestler to use. That's a cool feature. On the downside, the A.I. is stupid as hell. I saw on the broadcast, several times, where wrestlers like Kurt Angle, Christian Cage, Rhino, and many others would chase the guy around the ring, and end up running into the steel steps on the outside. When playing an Ultimate-X match, the computer, several times actually, just stood and watched as the guy broadcasting climbed up and took down the X. The roster is pretty small. Only 25 wrestlers, I believe. Not sure if it has been confirmed or not, but apparently for the 360 and PS3 versions, you'll be able to download wrestlers. To answer your other questions - no, the storyline isn't better than other WWE games. That's just in my opinion, though. Some may think different. I don't like that it's a fixed storyline, and that you have to win in order to continue. I like storylines like HCTP, where you get to decide the outcome of things. Gameplay is actually pretty good, with the exception of the stupid ass A.I. The pinning and submission mechanics are simple, but very fun looking. On the 360 version, there was a meter for when you were getting pinned. You had to shake the left stick back and forth; once the meter was full you were able to kick out. The more damage you take, the harder it is get the meter full. It looks really fun. Reversals look fun to pull off, too, and pretty easy. That's about it. Story mode can be completed in just a mere 2-3 hours, the guy who was broadcasting said it only took him two and a half hours, I believe. I haven't heard very many good things about this game either. I don't think there has been a good review for it yet, they've all been average. Mostly 6 out of 10's. I don't think I've seen a 7 out of 10 yet. Either way, it looks fun, but probably isn't worth a buy. It probably is if you have a 360 or PS3. The achievements for the 360 version look like they would be fun to get, and like I said, there's supposed to be downloadable wrestlers for the 360/PS3 versions. -------------------

Thanks for the reply, Chaos.
I'm putting this game on rent then. If I like it, I'll proceed in buying it. So the Story mode is linear? Hmm. Sounds boring but it somehow appeals to me in a way. It is somehow an RPG type of game as you have said. I just hope that the story isn't as cheesy as the SvR series usually has.

The story is fun, but the game play is shit. Almost every move you try will get reversed as you move along story-mode. The matches will feel the same and there isn't a CAW mode for the PS2 version. You cannot change moves and while you're in story-mode you'll unlock a lot of unknown people that no one has ever heard of or played with. Some of the un-lockable characters are actually CAWS. They aren't actual wrestlers.
Renting is a good bet, but i think you should keep the money and just wait for impact 2 or another wrestling game. ------------------- ![]() ![]()

IMHO, this game worth buying if you have friends who like wrestling, because playing it with friends give you a lot of fun.
AI stupid and cheating, and storyline to short, you can complete all in the game within few weeks.

I heard this game only supports 2 players. If that is true, then to hell with renting this game.
I'll just wait for 09 and if that sucked, I'll sell 09 and rent this.

Onyl supports 2 players? According to the game case it's 1-4, unless your talking online then I think it's only 2. As for the unlockables you get them after you gain so many style points unless your talking some wrestlers that you unlock in Story once you beat them, speaking of story it just got way out of hand for me it was like something from a movie. It also got to the point where to win in story I had to use the same 2 - 3 moves that could not be reversed since you get beat up pretty easily and find your body is in the red less then a minute into the match if the CPU manages to hit a couple of moves on you.
Anyway if anything I'd suggest renting it, if I had a store near me where I could rent games thats what I would have done rather then gamble the chance. ------------------- ![]()

Nope. It's 1-2 players. I was going to play the ultimate X match with my friends and i was surprised it only supported 2 players.

The game is a solid first attempt. Gameplay is crazy and fast-paced, true to the TNA style. I'd rate it 7.5/10. ------------------- MySpace Music Page

4/10 is what I'd rate it. Every match ends the same way and everything is just bland.

My friend recently lent me his copy. I can say the only reason you would ever want to buy this game is the superstars. But with the way the WWE games are now, counting 09's Create a finisher and Create a wrestler, then you could easily create your favorite TNA star and their finishing move. The story, and this is my opinion, was much to out there to be actually entertaining. Top that on with no Created wrestlers on PS2, along with the fact that half the roster is a bunch of random jobbers they created, and this game is barely worth a rent.
