Risk 2 crash to desktop

Hi,

I have the same problem as someone below; when loading is finished, screen restarts and game crashes to desktop. Can anybody give me a solution. It's the only game I have that doesn't work, and it works on my friend's PC...

re: Risk 2 crash to desktop

Risk II plays three movies after the loading bar screen. Problems at this stage are usually caused by out of date video card drivers. If possible, update your video card drivers via the Internet. Failing this, right-click on your Risk II shortcut and modify the target field by adding –noavi.

Your shortcut should now read something like this:

code
"C:Program FilesMicroproseRisk IIRiskII.exe" –noavi

Creating a shortcut and placing the -noavi makes the game function just fine, although im sure minus some intro movies.

Thanks for the tip, a lot easier than trying to update/undo update of video drivers to get game running.

Risk2 requires the indeo codc to play the in-game movies if u download it and install it you will have noproblems playing either in single player or multiplayer mode.

re: Risk 2 crash to desktop

I have owned and played this game for many years now without 1 problem. I recently re-installed the game and am having the same loading problems. The game will not get past the "preparing for battle..." loading screen. I tried the "-noavi" trick and it worked perfectly, but I dont see that as a true fix. I downloaded and installed the Indeo Codec 5.2 (latest version) and it is still not working. I have the most updated drivers for my video card, and am running xp pro sp2 fully updated.

Any other ideas for fixing this problem???

'-noavi' trick realy works, but be careful and do not copy word '-noavi' from this page like i did. But put it from your keybord. I copied that and the game didn't work. All because of hyphen ('-') witch was too long.... funny situation

thanks MfG, TR

Wow, the game finally works again! I had given up on it completely after searching in vain a few months ago. I checked Atari, Microprose, Hasbro Interactive, it seemed as though noone supported this great game anymore. I'm amazed that there was such a simple fix! Thank you TR, and thank you Kogut for mentioning that you had to change the long hyphen to a regular hyphen, I ran into that snag. It feels great to have untangled the mystery and to have revived the game!

re: Risk 2 crash to desktop

that did it thanks a bunch!!!

you need to change your shorcut target exatly as shown with the -noavi past the quote mark (your directory will be different:

from
"D:\Risk II\RiskII.exe"

to
"D:\Risk II\RiskII.exe" -noavi
