I'm writing a story that I never got past the first chapter. I drew sketches of the main characters and was going to scan them onto the computer, but my printer keeps acting up for some reason.

It tells me to reinstall the software, which I have done around five times. Any idea why it isn't working? Does it need a phone line to work?

And my scanner is built into my printer, by the way.

The phone jack is for a fax line, so your printer can print incoming faxes.

Make sure you have updated drivers for your printer. Try turning it off for 5-10 seconds and then turning it on as well as using another USB port(assuming your printer is a USB printer).

A make, model and error code/message would help alot.

Error Message: You need to install or run device software.
Model: HP Officejet 4200 series

Nevertheless, could try installing it via Windows:
Control Panel-> Printers and Imaging Devices(or something like that jazz)->Add a Printer and then follow the wizard.

If you can than you should format your computer and than install the drivers, that will work surely. if u don't want to do that you install the drivers in some other drive than c: (although i have never tried but heard that it works) it will work. I hope that this works.......and yes you do not a telephone line to scan but if you wanna send some fax....

I have installed two new cartridges, the black one is fine but the colour one will not print, before I installed it I cleaned the face from where the tape had come from with a cotton bud. Have I damaged it irreparably?
Or is there another reason?
I have gone through all the lexmark trouble shooting routine including re-installing the cartridges, but only the black prints
