Is this game as good as the other VP games? |
|
I got VP: Lenneth for the PSP and thought it was pretty mediocre at first but then after getting Covenant of the Plume I became a diehard VP fan and loved Lenneth almost as much as Covenant after playing it again.
I have a PS2 and since this is the only VP game I haven't played I figured I might as well get it despite the complaints about it, but if it sucks I don't think I would be able to get through it just for the VP story.

well what kind of complaints have you heard as i might be able to speak to some of those.
but just based off of what you've said, the story is by far not this games shining point. the brilliance of this game lies within a very unique battle system that is fun and requires a bit of strategy on your part. pile that on top of a a very deep item/weapons and skills system, you've got yourself a whole hell of a lot of replay to be had. i know i did. and to go back to the story, like i alluded it's nothing stellar. based on norse mythology it's an iteration you've seen in one manifestation or another if you've been playing rpgs for a while. all in all this is a very solid rpg with tons of replay. very much worth your time. ------------------- Swing that bottle

quote SaevusI guess people didn't like the fact that it is 3D when the other 2 are in 2D sprites. As for the story, if it is anything like Lenneth or Covenant then the story will be good for me, I am just worried about the game play because I know the battle system is good like all the other VP games but am I worried about the other elements of gameplay as well as the original characters. I know the game's story is based off of Norse mythology because VP: Lenneth and VP: Covenant of the Plume were also based off of Norse Mythology and Silmeria takes place after both of them story wise.

so you aren't worried about the battle system but what do you mean by other "elements"? that's a pretty vague statement. if you have more specific questions i can do my best to steer you in the right direction.
and complaining about 3d on a ps2 is pretty ridiculous. i understand the nostalgic sentiment if you played other titles first but it still isn't a very valid complaint in my eyes. the heart of the gamplay in the 2d variants, as far as i can tell, is pretty much completely intact. it's the same style of game just in a 3d format. ------------------- Swing that bottle

chloerocks, this game has 2d style camera in towns and dungeons
I don't see how anyone can say this game "sucks". likely, those people just suck at battles in it. it has a simple plot, that's by no means bad btw, and a fantastic battle system.

re: Is this game as good as the other VP games? |
quote pyramidreaperI don't think anyone thinks it sucks, I just don't see anyone claiming it is gaming perfection like Lenneth or now even Covenant. People on the Covenant and Lenneth boards on gamefaqs even claim Silmeria ruined the series. I am not too big on the randomly acquired characters or the fact that you have to play the game 50 times just to be on the hardest difficulty(especially when you can play hard mode right away on Lenneth and Covenant allows you to do the A path on your first playthrough). I guess I will think about it some more. thanks. quote SaevusI wasn't complaining about it being in 3D(although I prefer 2D sprites), some reviewers were and a lot of people on the other VP boards. It most certainly is an entertaining game, and is well worth the purchase. My only qualm is the number of recruits that are random and don't really have much of a back story to them, like in Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth (You don't get to recruit them after finding out how they die which is a shame).
The battle system is certainly up to par, and the actual characters that do have back story make up for the lack of the rest. Besides, you can recruit Arngrim, and Mystina which has to be cool, right? ------------------- I want your love. And I want your revenge

re: Is this game as good as the other VP games? |
quote Matt Addisonyeah and that kind of sucks because I am just finishing up Covenant of the Plume which has characters that are actually improved from Lenneth and all of them are original for the story(less mages, more fighters always=win). Also Covenant has Arngrim, and Mystina is just another mage(although in Covenant mages are Gods and there are a lot less of them) so this game can't even stand up to a DS game's characters. I am having doubts about getting this because the charm just doesn't seem there(like so many reviewers have said), and they will probably port it eventually so playing it on the PSP or whatever would probably enhance the experience.

Why would they port this game to PSP? It's far too large for that. Playing this game on PSP would definitely not enhance the experience.

i suggest you give it a try anyway. it may not stack up to the level you've built up your other vp games but it is still a quality rpg. ps2 games are steal these days anyway.
if you've got time to kill and nothing better to play then there's really no reason not to. ------------------- Swing that bottle
