When will gaming be taken seriously? |
|
Okay, title is a bit misleading i suppose.
(I dont mean 'serious' in the way that you actually think it's real! Basically, some people think playing video games is kind of 'childish' and maybe a bit 'sad.' Fair enough if it was a few years back, i would probably agree with that. But now, i think it's got so realistic, games such as Call of Duty, i really dont like people saying its childish. I'm 18 right now, and i admit, i love a good game of Call of Duty. I'm not obsessed like a little child, no, but i do like it. And out of my main mates, there's only another 3 of us who have a good interest in gaming in the way that we play online regularly and look out for release dates and such. You know what i mean. When i try to discuss anything Call of Duty related to one of those mates, even if i ask him if he's going online tonight or something, i feel rather embarrassed, and its awkward because i think some of my other mates will be thinking its pretty stupid and sad and all that. I don't see them that often these days being in college and that, and when i do, i feel as if i have to wait and pick my moments to mention anything about it. I really don't think playing video games regularly is childish and sad, now that they are so realistic and the online part of it especially. What do you think? ------------------- ![]() ~ Fit to Burn ~

i just see it as a hobby and a bit of fun.
but people who dont play PS3s and XBOXs, when you say something related to games and COD4 or COD5, they are always 'you are so sad all you do is play games'. this makes me annoyed.

It's something to do, something you find enjoyable, it's entertaining, there are people who do take it too seriously, those people who play games because they think they have to win all the time are people who take it too seriously, or those that abuse their team mates because they got them a loss, they irrtate me.
It's all just a bit of fun at the end of the day. ------------------- ![]() Back To The Front, You Coward!, You Servant!, You Blindman!

I think attitude towards adults playing games is better than it probably was 15 years ago. That's because the kids of the 80s and early 90s who grew up on Spectrums, Amstrads, NESs and Master Systems are now in their 30s. Games now target adult audiences specifically, whereas 15 years ago that wasn't the case. I can still remember when games didn't have age ratings. With that coming in its become a lot clearer to people that adults are as much a part of, if not THE main part, of the target market for games.
Another point I'd like to make, going along with what people have said so far in regards to 'Joe Public' looking down their noses at games and gamers, is that the games industry is probably bigger than the films industry now (I'm sure I've seen the stats somewhere). In many cases, game studios will employ more writers for a game than some film studios will to write scripts and screenplays. People will bang on and praise the cultural impact of music and films, but fail to consider that games have a huge impact too. One thing I think that has become bad in the gaming industry, however, is quality assessment and control. Back in the days of catridge games it was almost unthinkable that you could buy a game riddled with errors and bugs. These days patches are released to fix such problems almost as soon as you've bought the game. I guess this is a result of the growth of the industry: a combination of there being more developers, tiers in development, and networks (hence more likelihood of poor quality games), and commerical pressures, with publishers hurrying studios into releasing unfinished games in order to meet deadlines and convenient release dates (as is often the case in music)

Yeah....thinking about it, i think not as many older adults play videos games these days because they've changed SOOO much compared to the stuff that used to be around back in their time. It's COMPLETELY different.
Now, i think games cannot evolve as much anymore, they are so very close to realism, there's not much more to be accomplished apart from graphics and whatnot. So, i think there will be more older adults playing in the future because it will still be similar to some extent.. ------------------- ![]() ~ Fit to Burn ~

There's people out there (mostly online) who literally sleep with their consoles.

Yet they dont get embarrased at all by gaming. Alot of them love Call of duty ALOT more then me. They also play online alot and we usually play footy games and that.

My girlfriend gives me crap about playing games all the time. I'm constantly hearing shit like "When are you gonna grow up and stop playing video games?"
I feel the same as most of you in here...it's a hobby. It's fine as long as you don't let it control your life. ------------------- quote Every ignorant dumbshit on Neoseeker

quote AggroTell her"When are YOU going to grow up and stop watching movies/TV (or reading books, reading magazines, etc.)" They're all part of the Entertainment biz. Games provide entertainment, just like TV, movies, books, etc. Course, she might slap you or something XD -------------------

quote tallteen86I was going to say something around that line. Games are entertainment just like movies, movies and books. The only difference is they are more interactive and you can play a game lot more then you can read a book or watch a movie. -------------------

I see playing video games as a pass time. Kids can be envolved in gaming. But what happens is that overtime, parents may see this as a opportunity to get their kids exposed to winning for money and such. But, overall, playing video games should be fun and a way of enhancing skills and not something parents can control.
