Has Blu-Ray "Caught On"? |
|
Like, is it slowly moving in to replace DVDs?
I personally love Blu-Ray. Almost impervious to scratches, lots of space, and the movies really do look a lot better, with proper equipment of course. But I worry about the format. I feel like DVDs still own the market. ------------------- If life were made to be easy, I'd have gotten laid by now.

It's hard to scratch, but I've seen BRD's getting thumbprints when there's been no fingers even near them
Personally, I wouldn't bother with them. 720p isn't that much of an upgrade to SDTV. For gaming, I love Blu Ray. The difference between SD and 720p is something I just don't find that noticeable in movies I saw the LOTR extended trilogy for €15 the other day. For movies, I think the difference --both in quality and in price-- between DVD and Blu Ray isn't worth it. For games though, it's a huge break through. ------------------- ![]() Armed and Dangerous

Thats why you go out and buy a 1080p TV they are really cheap these days. No longer the £1200 monoliths, sure the odd TV is that price but 1080p is now at the mercy of a mere £300 for a sizeable 42" from Samsung.

quote ShaneYes, now. However when DVD was new new movies were $25 on average. Same as Blu-ray. In 10 years Blu-ray will be in the same boat. quote Slumpy monkeyOf course it is. DVD was a bigger jump from VHS than Blu-ray is from DVD and it took DVD at least 3 years to go mainstream. On top of that we are in the middle of an economic crisis. People are slow to adopt new technology as it is, but when the economy is bad they are even slower still. It will be a few more years before Blu-ray is strong enough to start competing with DVD on price. ------------------- ![]() Education Forum|Books & Literature My Brute

I don't think it has caught on yet as I only know a few other people that PS3's and only one of them buy Blu-Ray movies. The others don't use Blu-Ray. And I know no one with a standalone player. Once the price of the discs is cheaper I think it will catch on. Many people don't think it is worth it to spend $30 on a movie, or extra money to rent them as well.

See, most of the Blu Rays I buy, like The Nightmare Before Christmas, Big Fish, Edward Scissorhands, and GhostBusters are cheaper than that. I got each of those for 15 bucks. But that is because they are older movies...but they look great.

It's true that pricing is probably what hurts the Blu-Ray market, but as others have said, in time, prices will drop, and I think that Blu-Ray will prevail.

Unless those HDTVs everyone seems to be buying are bought for no reason, then no, Blueray won't catch on...But honestly, it obviously will. I have a 1080p HDTV and I can tell you, that the difference in visual and audio quality from VHS to DVD is equally revolutionary from DVD to BRD. It WILL catch on, and it has. It takes time for the competitive nature of capitalism to catch on, and for BRD players to drop in price for the average person to afford. Regardless, they WILL catch on.
If they don't, I give you permission to light my scrotum on fire.

The prices have already dropped an awful lot since when they first came out. I clearly remember seeing a Bluray film to buy for a whopping 40 euros.
Last week I bought Hancock (a relatively new film) for just 10 euros at my local movie outlet. -------------------

No, they definitely have not completely caught on yet. Nobody in my town ever buys them. So few do, in fact, that they've almost stopped bringing in new titles on Blu-Ray to the store because nobody buys them.

I think Blu-Ray is certainly catching on, but it'll have a long ways to go. You can find decent DVDs nowadays for under 10 dollars. Hell, I just picked up both Bad Boys movies for 7 bucks TOTAL. Meanwhile, even a crappy blu-ray is still well past 30.
That said, there was a time when DVDs were 29.99 or more (new) as well... so eventually we'll see greater market penetration. As standalone blu-ray players become cheaper and/or more consoles begin to incorporate that technology, we'll see the flux slowly begin to move. The format certainly hasn't failed, nor will it... let's put it that way. ------------------- ![]()
