do i have to do these manually? i never got a prompt for 2.8 but i herd lots of talk about it... hows this stuff work, haven't had my ps3 for very long.

FW 2.80 is optional and you don't really need to update it. All it did was allows some playback on some PS3 format games have been improved. But Sony didn't divulge into what games it was. Check here to see the post update.
Normally FW updates prompt you to update it when you try to log on PSN or play a game. Tbh, you don't need to do upgrade this one.
