Why do I see third party repairers offering cheaper prices than Sony, and they are making a profit? They do all the things that Sony do and make a profit. So how can Sony claim that they aren't making a profit if they're charging more than anyone else while providing the same service?

Sony > Repair Console > Break Even

Third Party > Repair Console > Profit

You see something wrong there?
Third party are picking up parts that aren't OEM. While there can be some pretty decent after market parts, a good portion of them are junk and you are taking a risk. Questions is, why would you take that chance? Just to save a few bucks? I'd much rather have the part that the manufacturer has specced out for their machine as it shows the part has been through rigorous testing on that platform.

I wonder how different this whole thing would have been had Watchdog reported on the 'disc reading' problem instead. A few people I know, as well as myself, have experienced this problem, and from browsing numerous forums it seems that its a much more common fault than the 'YLOD'.
I was thinking the same thing as my blu-ray failed as well. For some reason people seem to accept that failure as "growing pains" of the blu-ray technology.

I wouldn't use a third party repairer. But that's not my point, not even slightly. My point is that Sony is one company, and a third party repairer is another. Why is that Sony aren't making any money doing something that another company is doing while making money. You didn't really give an explanation. Something to do with parts?

Watchdog showed that more often than not you don't need parts. They just needed to re-apply the solder. Very quick, very inexpensive. So what's your argument again? I think, maybe, just maybe, you might be a Sony fanboy, and it's clouding your judgement.

Because, despite your very militant disposition, you've not come up with anything even remotely concrete.

Theres the problem, that is only a fix for some cases of the YLOD it does not fix every single case as shown on Watchdog where 4 PS3's died immediately after this attempt at fixing it

SONY have to research the problem and find the actual cause of the problem and fix it, some cases may be worse than others and may end up costing more than £130, so instead SONY charge a flat rate of £130 to all so everyone gets treated the same

Mail costs + solder/actual problem + wages of people doing it + having it done professionally + compensation for wasting their time because people couldn't look after their *bleep*ing console = £130.
No.
Yes.

I didn't mention anything about them not making a profit (the whole compensation factor was enough of a clue) and I reckon whoever said that is just bullshitting or misinformed, most likely the former. It's a case of them wanting payment for a service they're providing which, more often than not, is for a problem that's the fault of the consumer.

And it's not my place to say but don't start turning this into a fanboy thing; you're being just as obnoxious as kik is so you can't throw accusations around like that and expect them to mean anything.

At the part i have Bolded, i sorta feel what you are saying, but i take care of my PS3, at least hoovering once a month, never letting the fan stay on full power too long. Taking the Disc out when finished, but yet still, i get the YLOD.
Well if you do take care of your console and it happened then it's a case of 'shit happens, c'est la vie'.
