The PS3 Can: Stream Movies via NetFlix |
quote GamingTargetNow, not only can the PS3 play Blu-Ray, but now it can stream movies via Netflix, a feature Microsoft said it was exclusive to the Xbox 360 back in E3 (if I remember correctly). So, what does this all mean? The PS3 is starting to have some major changes now, it's not just a console but really the whole entertainment package. Seriously, it can't get better than this. My only concern is that it doesn't specifically state if the streams will be in HD. All it states is that it'll use a special Blu-Ray disc and you can access BD-Live, so I assume that means the streams will be in HD. All is good for $8.99 a month. My only concerns are speed and quality, specially speed. I can't stress enough how slow the PS3 ethernet connection is when you're downloading a demo that's about 1 GB or even a couple hundred MBs. Where as downloading from my PC takes minutes. It's something of a concern from me. Hopefully, when this thing comes closer to launch, they'll provide specs. I'd say you'll need about 4mbps in order to stream 1080p without much stuttering. I remember trying out a Streaming service that's supposed to come to the Xbox at some point in the near future and I had no problem.

Perhaps change the title of the thread cause I nearly glossed over this as thread made by someone late to the party. I've been streaming movies from my PC to my PS3 for years, had I known it was Netflix streaming I may have contributed far sooner.

Good to see. Anyone know if you get surround sound when you stream HD video or is it just stereo?

If they can manage to stream in 1080p, I don't see why not. Be aware though that the sound might be lossy though(obviously) so it may not sound as rich as the original source.

If you have netflix like I do, here where you go to get your disk, they will send it out later on when it comes available.

I got my disk in the mail today. I guess I can put my Roku box in the living room since I can watch it on my ps3 now.
Just a quick glance at it. It can only do 720p witch sucks since seeing what all a PS3 can do. Whats good is unlike with the Roku box you have to had to add movies to your instant que to be able to watch them on your tv, with the PS3 the menu is there for you to glance through. I wish there was a way to copy the disk on there because in order for you to watch movies on there you have to put the disk in every single time. The Disk just comes in a paper sleave so no where to really put it unless you buy a dvd case or something. This message was edited by Mr Who Thats Who on Nov 06 2009. ------------------- | |
