Why Praze!?!? |
|
This games gets lots of praise from fanboyz and other nerds, but when I played it, I discovered that it was just a run and gun rail shooter with no RPG elements and repetitive gameplay. Even its story gets *bleep*ed up after you kill the good, bad guy and the game replaces him with this annoying 1930's stereotype. The plasmids which every body keeps raving about are just like force powers from Jedi Knight or magic spells from Oblivion (also overrated). So why does this game get so much praise when it does nothing new, and nothing better than before?

I guess because the game forces you to be creative and delivers a message that is actually important, all while keeping it relative to the gameplay. But then, I've never really seen that as the criteria for a game of the year winner. They usually get it for stupid stuff like "This game was long" or "Shooting guns in this game was fun".
Simpler answer: I don't know. You spelled "praise" wrong. EDIT- And as H_o_p_e said, the setting is pretty awesome. Can't believe I forgot that. ------------------- ![]() "Lord, please grant me the power to psychologically torture these children into loving you!"

Well, it does. Your opinin is just different, relax.
For me? I loved the plasmids. RPG elemets are upgradding your guns, gaining powers, and upgrading powers by finding the right things. The setting was rather original, as was the time line it took. I enjoyed the story, and had a cool twist at the end. I dunno...I loved it, it won GOTY, and many people love it...I think the problem is on your side of things boss ------------------- "Among thousands of comrades and ten thousand enemies, only you... only you made me forget my dream."

I don't think the game is bad, I think it is average, and that it gets too much credit for originality when it does not truly deliver as much as it promised. For me the atmosphere was great until I died, allowing me, a total stranger of this city , to return to life while the actual residents were "permanently" killed. Though the art direction was great, I just feel there was alot more they [the dev's] could have done with it, like adding opposing factions, real choices, and cutting out/remaking the second half of the game, which kinda ruined the game for me. Would've been nice to be able to explore the city a bit more too.

Yeah, go back and listen to those radio messages... You missed a big revelation...
I love the game. Say what you want, but with the combination of guns and plasmids, I truly feel like I can play the game any way I want, dispatching foes however I want to. As for originality, what's the last game you played that took place in a huge underwater city in the year 1960, led by leaders "high on freemarket capitalism"? Sure, the whole "utopia turned to chaos" has been done before, but Bioshock does it with style. That's just my opinion. ------------------- *bleep*

I liked the story and the overall feel of the game, like that certain mysteriousness that it creates. The actual gameplay interaction was pretty average though I felt.

quote Anonymous. Some fair points. True enough about the vital chamber...why would it not resurrect residents? maybe somthing to do with the plasmids destroying their minds and bodys? Althogh **SPOILER**, who says your a starnger??***END SPOILER** But they did have opposing fractions man, there were like 4 different "sides" Fontaine, That surgen, that artist dude, and Ryan were all doing their own thing, some (fontaine/Ryan) were actually fighting. ------------------- "Among thousands of comrades and ten thousand enemies, only you... only you made me forget my dream."

If you paid attention to the story at all, you'd know the last stage that the vita chambers went through in development was testing them on Andrew Ryan's DNA. It was only supposed to work for Ryan himself, but they soon discovered that anyone with his DNA would be revived. They were never intended to be used for the normal residents yet.
The factions thing has already been explained. You can go back and explore nearly any part of the city you've been to by using the bathyspheres. Really, repetitive gameplay is the only thing close to a fair point you've made against the game so far. And really that is only repetitive if you aren't creative. The only thing truly repetitive is the enemy A.I. (which in my opinion was pretty awful). ------------------- ![]() "Lord, please grant me the power to psychologically torture these children into loving you!"

The bathyspheres were also only usable by Ryan or relatives of Ryan.
Bioshock Wiki Audiodiary I loved the atmosphere. The dystopia feeling was great and things were just twisted, I mean really *bleep*ed up. Dr. Steinman, for example (specifically the audio diary on the corpse in front of him). -------------------

Yeah, Steinman was great. Mainly because it's creepily believable. People seem pretty impossible to satisfy and if we reached what we would now see as "perfection" it isn't too hard to imagine someone like Steinman twisting it and looking for something more.

When I say opposing factions, I mean opposing factions as in Fallout or a lesser extent S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Oh, and I know that the vita chambers are designed for Ryan's DNA and that you have to find most of the tapes in order to piece the story
together (I got most of them), but the thing is if you were trapped in a strange underwater city, and you were killed some mutant jackass, it would probably be pretty startling to suddenly wake up in tube that you have never seen, nor heard of before, and obviously you don't know that your the leader's son yet. The story is better than most games and is on par with Half-Life, or S.T.A.L.K.E.R., System Shock 2 (oh wait). My biggest complaint was that the game's AI sucked( at least for me, they would just stand there and shoot), and that there weren't, say, groups of survivors out in the city, that you could stay with for a while, or work/barter with them. It would have been really cool if they had raised the RPG elements a bit. I never felt like going back to other parts of the city because I felt like I didn't have an incentive to. P.S: the game's storyline is pretty similar to System Shock 2, which is why It didn't really grab me as much as it could have.
