Whenever I play online, everyone uses that damn ground cross to lead players in behind my defenders, it always works well, and I always find myself in situations where I need to use it, but whenever I double tap square, my guy just does a tiny 5 foot high cross, I cannot get them to do a low cross. Is there a trick to it?

I am using an old controller, it came with my PS2 about 4 years ago, could that be the problem? It really pisses me off. I go into practice mode and try to get the ground cross, but I can only do it 1 out of 15 attemps. Help!!!!
