Story Information

The story picks up where players last left off with Kratos. Sitting atop his throne on Olympus, Kratos, the once mortal warrior has become a threat far worse than his predecessor Ares, had ever been. Kratos is a ruthless God, whose wrath strikes down anyone who crosses his path or the path of his beloved Sparta. The "Ghost of Sparta" sets out to alter that which no mortal, or god has ever changed, his fate. Kratos' journey brings him to the very edge of the Earth, facing countless beasts, monsters, and horrors from his previous life, all bent on preventing him from reaching his goal. But this is Kratos, and his defiance is filled with such arrogance and contempt that all of the Ancient World still trembles at his name: Kratos, the God of War.

General Information

  • Kratos has a brand new swinging ability, not unlike The Dark Prince from Prince of Persia.
  • The Cyclops make a return, as do the Cerebus.
  • Kratos now has the Icarus wings ability, first seen in GOW 1s deleted levels extra.
  • Kratos can now wield a bow
  • Kratos now has an ice power and something that looks like Posiedon's Rage.
  • Game has many new locations, and more varied, including a Jungle, Temple of the Fates, and a "castle-like" location
  • There will be more bosses (though how many is yet to be mentioned)
  • Euryale has been confirmed to be a mid-boss, and she will be BIG, bare chested, and grotesque (she's in the Jungle Temple)
  • Magic attacks will be used with your weapons (magic bestowed by an un-named benefactor
  • The Bow weapons will be in tune with the power of Wind
  • So far, Ice, Lightning, and Wind are confirmed elemental magical properties
  • The Blades of Athena are the confirmed weapons (though that could have been guessed by now)
  • Skeleton's will be in the game
  • The new Cyclope kill attack will be, as described as, "Wrench their eye out, shove it in their mouth, and stab the blade down through their skull."
  • Killing a Cerberus will include a 3-part mini game (one for each head)
  • More varieties of enemies in this game (Skeletons, long-haired undead warriors, etc.)
  • The Wings of Icarus will work as so--press X to jump, press X again to double jump, press X again to activate the glide (I also assume you must hold). The wings will last for a short time until all the feathers fall off
  • The "Griffen Battles" will be a part of traveling to new locations. Whilst riding Pegasus, enemies riding on Griffens will attack you. You can jump off of Pegasus and onto the Griffen and attack (as seen in the trailer)
  • The BoA can now be used to pull objects and enemies closer to you
  • The R2 button will be used to switch between weapons
  • Magic, combo system, and weapons system will be reminiscent of DMC3
  • Many new attacks, final attacks, and combos in this game obviously
  • Controls will stay almost identical to those in the first
  • The release date is set for Feb. '07
  • By the time of its release, it will have been in development for 2 years
  • The story WILL NOT follow ANY of the hints found in GoW's bonus features (though they are still debating on whether to include the brother into the game), but instead will just revolve around Kratos being stripped of his Goddly powers and out to change his fate
  • One of the bosses is the Barbarian King who was supposedly resurrected my Hades
  • Poseidon's Rage returns
  • Colossus is another boss
  • Barbarian King's hammer is an alternate weapon
  • Giant Sword is another alternate weapon

    Release Date: March 13th, 2007

You could add this to the article archive.

    Notable points:

    quote Swinging done with blades?
One section showed Kratos swinging from spot to spot, using what was likely a whip but possibly his blades - which blades, we're not sure.
    quote Be careful...New balance system?
Another section showed Kratos carefully navigating a thin bridge high above a pit as one of his enemies plummeted to his demise.
    quote More gore!
As for the killing, it's quite obvious that God of War II looks to exceed the original in everything from the complexity of kills to the level of brutality. At the start, Kratos is shown picking up some sort of boar, holding it up by its feet and continuously slashing it in the gullet. Next, the God of War is shown facing down a Cerberus. Quickly grabbing one of its three heads, he makes a giant twist and pops off its head, blood spilling everywhere.
quote Boss battles - bigger and better
The coolest part of the demo came at the very end as we saw Kratos standing atop a gryphon and battling a demon. Flying high above the clouds, Kratos gives the humanoid creature a good stabbing before tossing him over the edge. Unsatisfied with what is currently his only means of standing, Kratos then grabs one of the gryphon's wings, hacks at it a few times and tugs it free. Cut to the logo and the crowd erupts.

You know, I was just looking at the screen with the Cerberus, and I must confess--I don't think that's a Cerberus. Its middle head has horns while its left head doesn't. I think this may be a Chimera--half-goat, half-lion, half-serpent. Though I can't say unless I see its tail, I think this may be a Chimera since the Cerberus in that last game looked dramatically different.

UPDATE--Official God of War II website is already up. Though it has very little content, it does have four high-res screenshots and a small summary on the story (which can also be read on the first post here). There are empty sections for Trailers, Concept Art, and Sign Up, so anticipate some updates here in the very near future.

That pictures seems to confirm that Kratos swinging ability will be with the Blades of Chaos, and not some seperate rope or chain.

I never doubted that those were the BoC. It would seem odd for Kratos to use something else since his chains seem to sufice.

    re: Information Thread

UPDATE: I have new, but few, news on our boy Kratos. I'll highlight points of interest for everyone.

    quote PSM
Kratos, star of PSM's game of the year for 2005, is chain-blade ripping his way back into action...on PS2. The God of War sequel, expected to debut at this years E3 trade show in May, continues the tale of the Spartan anti-hero with a grudge against the Gods, especially with one particular, lightning-bolt throwing one (For the sake of those who haven't beaten the first one - and if you haven't, for shame! - we won't go into details).

He'll reportadly have new moves and abilities at his disposal for this adventure, including some planned for the original game, but cut before release. In addition to using the Blades of Chaos-like grappling hooks to swing and pull with, Kratos is said to aquire a gliding ability by vanquishing Icarus (that was planned for GOWI) and full-on flight by riding Pegasus. New weapons are said to include a Bone Sword and Hammer, joined by new items: the legendary Amulet of Fate and The Golden Fleece.

Like the original, God of War II is expected to release after the holiday rush, likely putting it on shelves in Januaey/February 2007 and making it one of the last true PS2 mega-games.
Glad to hear of the new weapons though. The BoA and the BoC just didn't cut it in the original for me.

    Sweet as a moose!

Looking forward to see what these new weapons are like. reaver11, you seem to have a lot of knowledge about Greek Mythology, do you think you could post some info on the golden fleece and the amulet for us?

    re: Information Thread

Well, I know about the Golden Fleece, but I don't know much about the Amulet of Fate (I'll look it up). But what I do know is that Jason was the original founder of the Fleece (atleast before Medea put a spell on it), and to get it, he had to scour a field of fire-breathing oxen. I'll look around so I can confirm everything. I haven't read Medea since my Freshmen year (and that was like 5 years ago) so I'm a little rusty.

EDIT--I have a description from Wikipedia about the origin of The Golden Fleece.

    quote Wikipedia
In Greek mythology, the Golden Fleece is that of the winged ram Chrysomallos. It figures in the tale of Jason and his band of Argonauts, who quested for the Fleece in order to place Jason rightfully on the throne of Iolcus in Thessaly. The story is of great antiquity – it was current in the time of Homer (9th–8th centuries BCE) and probably goes back to the 13th or 14th century BCE – and consequently it survives in various forms, among which details vary. Thus, in later versions of the story the ram is said to have been the offspring of the sea god Poseidon and Themisto (less often, Nephele).

Athamas, king of the city of Orchomenus in Boeotia (a region of southeastern Greece), took as his first wife the cloud goddess Nephele, by whom he had two children, the boy Phrixus and the girl Helle. Later he became enamored of and married Ino, the daughter of Cadmus. Ino was jealous of her stepchildren and plotted their deaths. (In some versions, she persuades Athamas that sacrificing Phrixus is the only way to end a famine.) Nephele, or her spirit, appeared to the children with a winged ram whose fleece was of gold. On the ram the children escaped over the sea, but Helle fell off and drowned in the strait now called after her the Hellespont. The ram took Phrixus safely on to Colchis, on the far (eastern) shore of the Euxine (Black) Sea. Phrixus then sacrificed the ram and hung its fleece on a tree (sometimes an oak tree) in a grove sacred to Ares, where it was guarded by a dragon. There it remained until taken by Jason. The ram became the constellation Aries.
I just recently remembered that the dress Jason's new wife put on was not the Golden Fleece. But I could have sworn that it was. Anyway, in case anyone was wondering what happened, once she put the dress on, it would stick itself to her and burn her flesh. But I could have sworn it was the Fleece that did this (or maybe it was Jason that it killed; I can't remember).

Anyway, here a small description of how Jason aquired the fleece.

    quote Wikipedia
Medea's role began after Jason arrived from Iolcus in Colchis to claim the Golden Fleece as his own. In a familiar mythic motif, King Aeetes of Colchis promised to give it to him only if he could perform certain tasks. First, Jason had to plough a field with fire-breathing oxen that he had to yoke himself. Then, Jason had to sow the teeth of a dragon in the ploughed field (compare the myth of Cadmus). The teeth sprouted into an army of warriors. Jason was forewarned by Medea, however, and knew to throw a rock into the crowd. Unable to decipher where the rock had come from, the soldiers attacked and defeated each other. Finally, Aeetes made Jason fight and kill the sleepless dragon that guarded the fleece. Medea put the beast to sleep with her narcotic herbs. Jason then took the fleece and sailed away with Medea.
Unfortunately, I could find nothing on the Amulet of Fate. Its possible that it is a fictional artifact.

This Amulet of Fate seems to be nonexistent. Perhaps its an original item. Probably one that is need to defeat the Three Fates.

Kratos is not out to defeat The Moirae, he seeks their wisdom. If you've ever seen Clash of the Titans, you'll see that they have almost infinite knowledge.

Anyway, about those screens. Is it just me or does the first screen look like an enormous temple being hauled about by giant horses in the middle of the ocean?

And Kratos' new electrical attack looks really cool. Looks like it will individually target enemies instead of just a huge wave.

And the screen where Kratos' is fighting in what looks like a castle with a burning forest in the background is enough to make anyone theorize for months.

Can't wait till more is revealed at E3.

    Information Gained From the Screens
  • Kratos has some sort of new magic attack, almost like a force push.
  • The chests make a return - at least the magic ones
  • A version of the Poisidens Rage attack seems to remain

And although I wouldn't include these in the first post, we can also see a new environment as something being pulled along by two massive horses. Another is a castle in the background.

I always assumed he'd use the Blades of Athena, seeing as Ares ripped the Blades of Chaos off him and at the end of the game you use the Blades of Athena for a very short time.
But looking at that picture, they look like the BoC seeing as the BoA were gold... but I'm not sure he'll be using the BoC...
