It is produced by the team of Banpresto and Gust. The story begins on the island named Sol Ciel with a tower (named Ar tonelico) of extreme height and is mainly about a particular relationship between humans and another race -- Revatail.

At E3 2006, Nippon Ichi Software America (NIS America) announced that it would pick up Ar tonelico, with an expected release date on October 31, 2006. However, that release has been delayed until February 6, 2007 due to the release of Final Fantasy XII.

Sol Ciel

The world of Sol Ciel (which translates to Sun Sky) consists only of the floating island "The Wing of Horus" and the tower "Ar tonelico." The Wings of Horus are kept afloat over the clouds by Ar tonelico. The Clouds of Death stretch out beneath the island, and the sky above the island is covered by an area of plasma called the Blast Line. In the past, this world had the normal skies, land, and advanced technology. Due to two separate disasters, all of that is gone. The first disaster occurred when the material "Glasno" went out of control. This was called "Glasno Inferia." The second disaster was caused by an uprising of the race called "Revatails." Currently, the Church of Jere Jeremiah and Tenpa are the two most powerful organizations in this closed world.

Revatail

The Revatails are a rare race in the world of Sol Ciel. They look no different from humans but all Revatails are female. All of them possess an "Install Point" in the form of a marking somewhere on their body. They also possess a mysterious power called the "Song Magic," and can "converse with the world" by doing so.

Though the population size of Revatail is small, they can be distinguished into several class by their blood purity.

β-pure blood and the 3rd generation

Revatails can be classified into two different categories. The pure-blooded ones are called β-pure blood while the Revatails that interbreed with humans are called 3rd generation. β-pure bloods have a much longer lifespan than humans and are much more capable at casting song magic. Whereas the 3rd generation have much shorter lifespans than humans and are also much less able than their pure-blood counterparts. Because of their short lifespan, many 3rd generation Revatails join either the church of Jere Jermiah or Tenpa to obtain a life prolonging substance called "Daiquility."

Ar tonelico

The tower is the center of the world Sol Ciel. It is said to be made from ancient technology. People have become dependent on Ar tonelico after losing the sky and the land below to the two disasters of the past. There are monsters lurking inside the tower called "Viruses." As a result, there are people that climb the tower either to destroy the viruses or to obtain some of the ancient culture scattered throughout the tower. The middle of the tower is inhabited by a race of people called the "Tel." Their city is called "Im Feina" and they have supernatural powers. And near the top of Ar tonelico is a city called "Platina," which is considered to be a holy sanctuary for the people living in the Wing of Horus.
