It's like when they say we need eight glasses of water every day- that's also been proven false.

I'd like to know who comes up with this mad stuff.

Folks, I just want to encourage everyone to participate in this thread. It is sort of a communal story for the forum that I believe has a lot of potential.

I always thought that it was because we only use 10%-ish of our brain at any one time. While that certainly seems possible, I'm not sure it is correct.

Think about it logically.
Why would we have such a large brain if we didn't use nearly all of it all of the time? Why not just have a brain a tenth of the size it is now and use all of that?
I know for a fact that the 10% brain thing is false. It has been proved by science.

I have a quick question for any veteran writers here. Have any of you heard of the Writers of the Future contest or, even better, have entered it? If you have, can you give an account of your experiences? I just sent in my manuscript on the last day of the quarter, and I'd like to hear what other people think of the contest.

To get the conversation rolling again, here are some thoughts on the issue of criticism - positive and negative.

Apparently, it is considered bad form for a writer to directly respond to criticism, which is something I learned from watching an extra on a Black Books DVD. Since I don't get any, this is not such a big deal for me.

I refrain from criticising another's work because it makes me feel like a hypocrite.

Yeah, I noticed this as well, they take it as being "Defensive" towards my work despite the fact that I asked for critisism, is an explanation or reasoning behind my actions in my writings really takeable as an attack? If so then I suppose I should never ask for critisism anymore, especialy when it makes little if any sense whatsoever. Ah well, c'est la vie. I don't comment/criticise other peoples work for 2 major reasons with many sub-divisionary reasons that may/may not make me sound like a complete prick and or egotistical Sod. Anyway enough ranting, I only comment when I'm truly interested in what I see or as a sign of good faith towards a friend of mine who's still getting his wings. I tend to be overly nasty in my comments and critisism and am not actualy trying to deprive the writer from his love of writing but there are some people who take it far too seriously, thats one of the reasons I don't anymore. The other is I really just cba to type up critisism for something because then I don't read it with an avid fondness for the characters I'm reading about, it gives me a negative outlook on it and I blatantly stab the idea's down the river styx into the graveyard of blatant idiocy.

Psychology facinates me, its about time I embrace the things I enjoy instead of the things the world forces upon me...
