XXI. Amused

When I wake up, Jasper is gone, off to do whatever it is he occupies his time with. What did I expect? That he’d be right there waiting to comfort me, tell me that last night was all a cruel joke? No. Excuse or no excuse, years of killing had given him nothing but a black heart, and admitting the truth to me wouldn’t change that.

The few remaining days of the week slide by slowly, and yet almost in fast forward. I hardly understand what the lectures are about in class, and nobody really bothers to try and begin a conversation with me anymore. My mind has put itself in sleep mode to protect itself from what I know. And of course, since I’m the only one that knows it, there’s no excuses I can make in my classes. Not that it matters. The teachers don’t do anything when I screw up an answer, or forget to take notes. They shrug it off as if there’s something wrong with me. I want them to help, can’t they see that? Instead I’ve been written off as the girl who’s been through too much, the hopeless one who’s past anybody’s help.

The only person who seems to care at all about me is Ray. Every time he sees me I’m flooded with concerned questions such as “What’s wrong?” and “Why do you keep looking all around like that?” and “Why won’t you talk to me?” But he doesn’t give up despite my pathetic attempts to tell him I’m okay. I’ve never been a good liar.

As Ray once again walks me back to my dorm he is especially set on forcing me to talk. “Camryn. What. Is. Wrong.”

“I’m not stupid, you don’t have to talk like that.”

He groans, “Well then tell me what happened! You weren’t this sad when you got here!”

“Yeah well, things change,” I sigh.

“Not like this. Every time you see a shadow you practically jump five feet in the air, I saw you shaking in Medieval History when we were talking about old witchcraft and curses, and when I leave you in your room you always look around like somebody should be there.”

I hate how observant he is. Of course I have somewhat logical reasons for why I do these things but he’s not going to believe me. He won’t understand, nobody will. I am untouched and isolated, an outcast in the normal world that I used to fit into. The only one who just might be able to cure my craziness is Jasper, and he’s disappeared. Or maybe not, since I keep thinking I see him around every darkened corner.

“I just have a lot on my mind Ray…” I say, and it isn’t a lie.

“Then I have just the thing for you.” He reaches into his pocket and pulls out two strips of paper, “Two all-day passes for Six Flags: Animal Kingdom tomorrow. Non-refundable by the way, so don’t tell me to take them back. There’s nothing better than a few thrill rides to cure, well… anything. I’ve invited three other people too, so don’t think it’s like a date thing.” His cheeks flush slightly at the thought of that.

I smile, racking my brain for an excuse to back out of this one. “I don’t think so,” I say.

“Well great then! I’ll pick you up tomorrow at seven thirty, we want to get there early! Bring good walking shoes, and a backpack is probably smart too.”

“No!” I protest.

“Listen I know you have nothing to do, and I know you’ll have fun. So trust me and deal with it,” he states, trying to close the subject.

“Oh fine…” I sigh, giving in. Maybe I’ll pretend I’m sick in the morning or something. Socializing at an amusement park is not at the top of my to-do list.

“Do you mind if she brings a friend?” Jasper steps next to me, appearing out of nowhere as usual. He’s smiling coolly at Ray with a hint of amusement in his eyes. Ray looks positively shocked, staring from Jasper to me – and who knows what my face looks like right now? With nobody speaking, he continues, “Having trouble speaking I see. Well I’m coming then, and don’t worry,” he glances at Ray, “I’ll pay for my ticket.” And without another word he’s off again, disappearing right before a campus supervisor walks by.

“Who was that?!”

“A…” I hesitate, is Jasper a friend? An accomplice? Or am I still going as far as enemy? It’s not like I can tell Ray that he’s the one who killed my family, he’s the one who I think I keep seeing, and his curse is the very reason I’m going insane. So now I’m supposed to not only deal with a day of thrill rides and screaming, but also dealing with the unpredictable murderer? How many questions will I have to make up answers too? How long will it be before somebody gets suspicious? What if one of them finds out?

“…I know him from back in South Carolina,” I finally finish.

“You seemed pretty shocked to see him,” he notes, “Boyfriend? Not very affectionate I guess,” There’s the slightest hint of envy hidden in his voice. I almost choke on the air I just inhaled.

“No!”

“Jeez, okay then. Um… then I’m still going to pick you up then. I guess this… guy will be with you or something, because I don’t know where he lives.” The smile returns to his face. “We’ll have fun tomorrow.”

I manage a half-smile, “Yeah.. okay.” Although there’s no doubt in my mind that everything will go wrong.

I think it's great adding a supernatural theme to the story.
