National Novel Writing Month

quote NaNoWriMo Official Website
National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing November 1. The goal is to write a 175-page (50,000-word) novel by midnight, November 30.
Valuing enthusiasm and perseverance over painstaking craft, NaNoWriMo is a novel-writing program for everyone who has thought fleetingly about writing a novel but has been scared away by the time and effort involved.
Because of the limited writing window, the ONLY thing that matters in NaNoWriMo is output. It's all about quantity, not quality. The kamikaze approach forces you to lower your expectations, take risks, and write on the fly.
Make no mistake: You will be writing a lot of crap. And that's a good thing. By forcing yourself to write so intensely, you are giving yourself permission to make mistakes. To forgo the endless tweaking and editing and just create. To build without tearing down.
More information.

Basically, you’re going to be writing a 50,000 word novel in just 30 days. It’s going to bad quality but it’s something that gets people who don’t normally write giving it a go and it lets people break through the limits they’re usually bound by. It's a challenge. If you don't normally write, why don't you give it a go?

To take part, just sign up to the site and go for it. As long as you start writing in November and get the thing word counted by the end of November, you’ve done it.

If you win, you’re given the opportunity to receive a free proof of your novel. That’s your very own version of your novel in book form.

re: National Novel Writing Month

That looks really interesting, but how do they know someone actually wrote the novel in 30 days? Someone could simply say they wrote a novel in 30 days and submit one they have either been working on or one that is finished before the start date. I wonder if they have ways of checking this?

re: National Novel Writing Month

They don't really but really if you just do that you're missing out. Sure you get a free proof of your novel at the end of it but the reason that's offered is so you consider publishing the book afterward. The proof is actually really good quality so they're really popular.

Really it's not about boasting you've done it, it's the satisfaction at the end. I was really pleased with myself when I completed it last year.

I'll be participating. I haven't written much lately, so this should push me back into it. I've never written anything this large though, so it will be new.

re: National Novel Writing Month

Believe it or not, I wrote my first full length novel in about 30 days! It was 550 pages and about 135 thousand words before I eventually edited it down to about 400 plus at about 100,000 words!50K words is a challenge but VERY VERY doable if you have a story already in mind you want to pump out there. I would do this challenge, to be honest, but I can't think of a good story idea right now for some reason that passes understanding!

re: National Novel Writing Month

Haha, I signed up late for it last year and did it in only 20 days. It is unbelievably easy if you keep at it every day. If you really want to give it a go and you're stuck for a plot, in the forums there's an adopt a plot thread where people post up their plot ideas for other people to use.

re: National Novel Writing Month

Actually, I don't like using other people's plots, but that sounds like a good thread candidate for a stucky. Can you give me a link to it? At least I would want to list it in one of the index threads at the top of the forum.

re: National Novel Writing Month

Here. There's a whole series of adopt threads so anybody can find all sorts of things if they're stuck.

I know what you mean, I don't think I could ever use a plot idea that wasn't my own. It really helps everybody else though.

Man I really want to do this, but I have a ton of stuff going on this month. I'll have to make sure I'm relatively clear next time around.

That 'Adopt a..." list is really interesting as well, kudos for the link Diamondflame

re: National Novel Writing Month

I totally signed up for this. I don't know if I'll make the 50k limit, because I have tests and exams and finals are just 2 months away (wow I sound so much like Hermione Granger there >.<).

I'm also reading through the "Adopt a Quirk", which is very amusing, especially when you run across one in there and realize you've used it for previous characters and you remember how that worked out. XD

I've decided I'm going to do this and try to finish a novel that I started years and years ago but haven't made significant progress on in a long time. My page is http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/user/569430 for anyone who wants to add me. I added you, Eridor.

re: National Novel Writing Month

I signed up for NaNoWriMo, and since this is my first time doing this I set my word count for 35K. If I can make it past the 35K mark this year, then I'll increase the amount of words next year.

I've edited the first post and put links to your profiles in. If anybody else wants their username up there then just post it in the thread.
