Hey, BMX, I'm writing a short story to be published in a magazine now... Your help would be greatly appreciated once I have it ready for editing. However, it's sci-fi, not my favorite genre, so if it's below my standards, kindly tell me. Contact me over AIM.

re: La Bleu Café : A Writer's Gathering Place

I have a problem with a story I'm working on. In my mind, the sword-fights are really long but if you put it all into words, it would turn out less than what I expected it to be.

Is there any way that I could make it longer?

May I ask your reasons for wanting those particular scenes to be longer? It's just something that piques my interest.

I want the fighting scenes to be different from what I've read and well, watching certain animes makes me want to write about a kinda long fight.

Well, you can be exaggeratively descriptive. And add some suspense and talking. That's about it...

But it's kinda hard to make a long sword fight in a story.(easier on a movie/show) OR you can make many continous fights...

I dunno, my brain is squeezed...

re: La Bleu Café : A Writer's Gathering Place

Hey there. I'm having some trouble creating the first original story i'm ever posting on the net. I know what I want to write, but I can't figure out how to start it.

-basic plot-
An evil entity is attacking the galaxy. while attacking the planet of elemental fairies, dai, a young fairy at the temple is handed six rings of elements. these rings give whomever wears them emense power (like the power to call forth a tsunami) however only six people can use the power, although they don't know it. Dai must seek out the six and hand them the rings in time and teach them how to use the power in time to fight the evil before it can enshroud the galaxy in ever-lasting darkness.

I've got the very first part worked out were Dai is given his mission, but I don't know how to write the scene where Hikari and Aku (twins that wield the power of light and darkness) will find Dai and their rings.

any help?

Not sure if this is the kinda thing to post here... But does anyone else (mainly fanfiction writers) keep constantly having ideas, having to give up old ones, possibly even forget about them? I hate that.

Oh, and hi.

yeah, I get dozens of ideas(not just for fanfics either) and I'm just not able to figure out how to end the story, so I have to discard them, or just write out part of it, and hope that somewhere later in time I'll figure it out, or be able to modify my idea a little and make it believeable.

sometimes, just as I've thought of a good plot, it ends up getting messed up when I actually try to write it- I mean something goes wrong, or I write myself into a corner, and can't get out of it. That really ticks me off.

re: La Bleu Café : A Writer's Gathering Place

I make a short plot point outline. Where I list the major ideas I have, plot twist, introduction of characters, ect...

I find having a vague idea of the overall picture makes it easier to takle the story. It at least gives you a direction to right in, plus I can changing a lot of it as I wright, so it is flexible too.

Oh, and hi.
All the time. Maybe because I'm so busy and thus don't set aside that much time for my writing anymore, or because I'm also trying to watch TV or play Xbox while I'm also on my PC.

re: La Bleu Café : A Writer's Gathering Place

I write most of my ideas in various locations, be it tangible notebook or online forum (usually for personal use only). I just usually lose interest and pick it up later.

I've scripted movies, written novels, designed video games, all of which are centric around a complex storyline that would keep the reader reading, had i actually completed the story (i always finish at the very least a plotline overview). For instance one of my ideas, Bound Victims, has an incredibly lengthy and complex storyline thats ive drafted out, but writers block screws me over and I stop writing eventually.

I find that 95% of my works are directly derived from childhood "ideas." I'm a traditionalist and like sticking to my memories, so the little games I played as a kid with my Playmobiles or my Legos I slowly turn into a plotline for a novel or movie (or, rarely, a video game).

re: La Bleu Café : A Writer's Gathering Place

quote dave_yin

Developing a character is sort of like acting. You don't just write about a character, you are that character and all the other ones which you develop. Each and every single one of them, you must imagine in your mind, and act out their situations, sort of like living in their skin. Either the character becomes a version of yourself, or you become the character itself. Only this way will you know how the character well to judge how they will react in different situations. Like Sierra said, all main characters are 'human like' which means they can think, in terms of no one is purely evil and no one is perfect.

A final thing would be to make sure you have two characters that stand out above all. The Protagonist and the Antagonist. They may have sidekicks or great friends/allies, but you must have a single main character who's journey you are going to focus on. (I'll write more as I think of stuff to add.)

[Edit:] Never make two characters alike even if they are on the same side, (with an exception if the antagonist is a mirror version of the protagonist) and also,
Make the Characters believable. (e.g. never say something like 'he has green hair'. which would be nice and possible in fantasy anime stories, but unless it is important to your story, don't add that in.)
Like dave_yin said you have to live the character be rhe characte, soon you will find yourself, writing almost without even knowing it...
