Exclusives War
|
A couple of things here... Okay, I have no idea if this is bugging anyone else or not, but... What's up with statements like this- "Exclusive confirmed for -blank-, date for -other blank- TBA." How is that possible? Why call it an exclusive if- a second later- they give the idea that another console is going to get it. Why tell me that DW6 is going to be a PS3 exclusive for three months, then it'll be on the 360, or any other game or system for that matter. Is the definition of 'exclusive' changing to- 'the first console to get it'? Its so blatantly cheap and unfair to consumers... Granted it seems like more of a 360-PS3 thing, but now it's starting to cross into Wii borders.
Two other things. What do all of you think about the news floating around about Microsoft 'stealing' exclusives from Sony? Do you think they'll eventually turn their attention to the Wii?
Also, just out of curiosity... Who do you think has the most treasured exclusives and who's are you most excited about? Heh...

WE are seeing more and more "timed" exclusives these days, due to a couple of factors. 1.) PS3 has sold poorly thus far. Games originally designed just for PS3 are being pushed to 360 because the install base for 360 is twice as large. It just makes business sense to recoup development costs. 2.) Development costs are growing higher and higher, so developers must release their games to the largest market. Right now, that is the combined 360/PS3 demographic.
I don't really see this as all that unfair, however. Other than extra content added to other versions, such as online multiplayer in 360 versions of PS3 games, there is really no cost to you unless you are a console "fanboy," who would feel as if companies are turning there back on you to sell to the competition, but selling a game on multiple platforms has little effect on anyone personally. You still get the game for your system of choice, its just more people can play the game as well.
As for your "turning to Microsoft" comment, I think we are already seeing some shifts to Wii development. I doubt it will be to a major extent, but companies will certainly shift more resources and better development teams to Wii as the user base continues to grow.

Anyone recall the Capcom promises for the GameCube? They promised some number of exclusive killer app titles for the GCN called the Capcom Five.
I think the only one that remained exclusive was P.N.03...
quoteThe Capcom Five has become infamous, particularly among Nintendo fans, for not turning out nearly as well as everyone had expected. P.N.03 was panned by many critics for being a dull, mediocre game, and Dead Phoenix was cancelled for reasons unknown. The other three games (Viewtiful Joe, Killer7 and Resident Evil 4) were all ported to the PlayStation 2, and the Viewtiful Joe and Resident Evil 4 PlayStation 2 ports were both given extra features not included in the GameCube games.

True enough, I have to agree with most of that. Now don't get me wrong, I'm no devoted 'fanboy' of one console, but... I do see a level of unfairness. Resident Evil 4 will make a fine example. It came out on GC first, was a hit loved by many, then it goes to the PS2 with additions. Then it came to the Wii for (what most), consider the best version of all. Why buy the first if the second is most likely going to be better? I have no problem with consoles sharing titles, its when a developer makes me wait months for a game... pay a hefty amount for it while its new- only to have it ported to another system with extras. I find myself paranoid over whether or not to pick up a game because I don't want to find out two months later that it'll be out on another system with some new awesome feature. I am aware that it is an annoyance that has no remedy. On the same coin, you see a dark side... The developers want more people to play their games- that's only natural. In order to give it a 'push' on other consoles, they award them bonus content to give the original buyers a reason to pick it up and new ones. Its a twisted game that makes me wait months to buy some great games. On a side note, I was unaware of the story behind the Capcom Five. Thanks for pointing it out, SF. I find myself wondering if Capcom will make up for it in this generation... Personally I'd like to see a Gotcha Force sequel on the Wii, though I doubt many have heard of it. The greatest game on the GC (an exclusive capcom game), in my oppinion. Heh...
