I look at it this way.
Games with guy main characters: Tons of them and A LOT of them are flops. Games with girl main characters: Not a whole lot in general, but the ones that they do make are usually really good. Besides the ones that I've read in this thread, there is Perfect Dark and Eternal Darkness that I absolutely loved. Not to mention the fact that most guys would rather watch a girl slash up enemies more so than watching a guy do it. -------------------

Guys don't like being portrayed in a game as a girl and we feel insecure. And more guys than girls play video games so thus the "Disappearing" results.

I don't mind playing as a girl in a game. I've also never overlooked a game based on their being a female protagonist. Its all really just a cause of ratio and hype. Games with female protagonists are few and far between; but when they do show up they tend to be hyped, so if they fail it seems like a bigger loss than it should be. Games with male protagonists are a dime a dozen, and when one fails no one cares because it was probably just a horrible game. I'd venture as far to say that more games with Male protagonists are doomed to fail than are games with women... number-wise i'd be correct, but percentage-wise i'd most likely be wrong.

girls do not doom video games.
basicly there is one game that without girls would have a tough time making it what it is today and that game is (drumroll plz) RESIDENT EVIL in almost every (main) resident evil game the story relies heavily on girls just as much as boys. i mean many people praise code veronica saying it to be one of the best CLASSICAL r.e. games of all time. and throught the first 15 or so hours (if its your 1st time playing) of that game is only playable through a girl. and in other games you had a choice to choose between girl and boy and many chose the girl. resident evil without girls will make it JUST like the movies misunderstood and totally unbearable. and im sure that more games treat girls this way. there was this amazing multiplatform game were you play as this girl taking photos trying to uncover a deadly truth though i forgot what it was called. (i hope they make a sequel though) ------------------- DON'T CLICK ME! CLICK THIS!

First off, I'm glad this thread got popular again, as it feels very important. Now, I wanna touch on something Dai said earlier:
quote DaiI can see what you're getting at, but there's another factor when replacing a factor: iconic value. Like replacing Mario for example: people don't play Mario games just because he's a male character, they play because most people grew up playing his games for over 20 years. Now some cases, I think it can work. Just about all the games you mentioned, it could work. Some cases, like Call of Duty, Sonic, Halo, and Prince of Persia would have to explain why you're playing as a girl and not the normal male protagonist that their series is known for. But otherwise, yeah go for it. Hmm, now I'm starting to wonder how would a Princess of Persia game be like... ------------------- DS WFC Status: Pokemon Only | Gamertag: NoKisum

quote MusiKonYou've hit on some good points. Its hard to imagine such games not still becoming popular. I must agree, though I still question it. Would Mario be the icon he is today, had he been a woman? It becomes a question of how difficult it is for a female character to become an 'icon'. Even if the gameplay was the same in Super Maria Sisters, would people have flocked to it at the time? What guy would go to school bragging about how far he got in such a game? To some extent, times are different now. Yet, in so many ways, they are the same. As I said, look at gaming's most recognizable female icons. Samus- many didn't know who she was until Smash Bros. 64- some swore she was a guy back then. Lara Croft? Popularized by sex appeal- granted, the game itself is supposed to be great. What if Lara was plain and unappealing though? Then what? Peach and Zelda- popularized by their male counterparts. Who else is universally recognized? In a world where every generic, grizzled soldier with a troubled past and a chip on his shoulder sells like hotcakes, female leads are often ignored. Its a sad trend that causes fantastic games to fall through the cracks. At this point, I'm ready to just shrug and say its similar to the way boys don't 'play with dolls or barbies'. Society purposely gears its males and females toward different paths. That's the only conclusion I can come to. I guess. Heh... ------------------- Click below to check out my popular Smash series'!
