    • VS - Reach the finish line before friends and family to win (2 Players)

    • Showdown - Fight off a team of enemies (1 Player)
  • Table Tennis - Put a little slice on it with the poolside table tennis competition.
    • Match - Beat opponents in 6-point matches (1-2 Players)
    • Return Challenge - Return as many serves as possible (1-4 Players)
  • Wakeboarding - Hang on tight! Grab your Wii MotionPlus and try for some big time air as you zip around the island.
    • Wakeboarding - Complete tricks to earn points (1-4 Players)

  • Wuhu Island has so many things to do, there’s never a dull moment. A dozen activities await visitors: Archery, Frisbee®, Basketball, Cycling, Canoeing, Power Cruising, Table Tennis, Air Sports, Bowling, Swordplay, Golf and Wakeboarding.
  • The activities use the precision controls of the Wii MotionPlus accessory to help players come much closer to the physical reality of engaging in the actual sports. Every real-world action, whether it's a perfect drive on the fairway or a slice off the course, is meant to be faithfully replicated.
  • Each activity has multiple fun challenges designed to keep visitors coming back for more. Basketball players might compete in a three-point shootout or jump into a three-on-three pickup game. Archery enthusiasts must aim for the bull’s-eye across ever-increasing distances and obstacles.
  • Different activities use the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers in different ways. For example, players hold the Wii Remote like a paddle in Canoeing, while in Cycling they use both arms to "pedal" with the two controllers. The Wii MotionPlus accessory picks up every nuance of motion and translates it onto the TV screen.
  • Depending on the activity, players can compete solo or against other players. Some activities even let players team up to work cooperatively.

re: Wii Sports Resort: The Official Thread of Kicking it Back on Wuhu Island

Arm hurts...

Well, I've officially played ever sport at least once, and would order them by personal preference thusly:

1. Sky Sports:
Specifically the island flyover. I have honestly not had so much fun just flying around and looking at things since, well, ever. The amount of stuff to see is astounding, popping balloons and collecting landmarks gives the game that competitive edge, and the plane controls are just plain fun, no pun intended. I only wish there was a pure free fly mode without a time limit, but playing multiple times is no problem at all. I also wish dogfighting was available in a one player vs. cpu mode, but oh well. Skydiving is interesting, but no where near as good as just flying my plane over volcano or doing barrel rolls over humpbacked whales.

2. Sword fighting:
The obvious showcase for WMP in the game. all of the sword fighting modes are well done, and tons of fun. I haven't decided which of the three sword modes is my favorite, with them all posing unique challenges that never fail to entertain. This game makes me want Red Steel 2 and the next Zelda now.

3. Archery:
Another case of Zelda want, archery has to be one of the most satisfying experiences in the game. It honestly feels like you are releasing the drawstring of a bow as the arrow flies away, and the challenges presented are interesting.

4. Bowling:
Ah, the old standby from Wii Sports 1, Bowling. I can definitely feel the increased sensitivity in the game, and though I have played this one very little so far, I can't wait to play more, especially the ten pen challenge.

5. Golf:
The other game returning from the first Wii Sports, and still just as fun. The additional courses are a welcome addition, as well as the ability to draw and fade. Now I just need to learn how to actually do those things.

6. Table Tennis:
Another game that is just plain fun, especially when you get some major spin on a shot and whack a guy in the face on a return. The increased sensitivity also means that you have to really move the Wiimote as you would your racket, which provides an interesting challenge for the game. I just wish regular tennis had been included as well.

7. Frisbee:
The dog fetch game and Frisbee golf are both great fun. The reason it ranks lower on my list is my own ineptitude at throwing the darn thing on a regular basis, and the fact that the other games in this set are just that much more awesome.

8. Wakeboarding:
A fairly simple Excitebike style game where you pick up speed for landing jumps or doing fancy tricks in midair with the flick of a wiimote. Once you get the timing down, you can link into some pretty big bonuses, which is a lot of fun.

9. Cycling:
I actually like the cycling so far, contrary to a lot of reviewers on the internet. It provides an interesting mix of ability and strategy, coming from your ability to keep a good rhythm while steering and racing while drafting to save stamina.

10. Canoeing:

Canoeing is a challenging game physically. You'll definitely be feeling it in your arms in the morning, much like Wii Sport Boxing was. I'll have to invest some more time in the more advanced levels to really judge this game better.

11. Power Cruising:
Power cruising feels somewhat simple in comparison to the depth of the other games. Perhaps because there are already a number of racers that you use tilt control in, combined with the fact that basically the only thing you really do is rev the engine one in a while.

12. Basketball

Basketball is the only sport that has nearly caused me to throw my Wiimote out of frustration. The shot mechanics that the game wants you to use are very well explained, meaning a lot of frustrating misses are in store as you figure our what the game wants you to do to actually hit a shot. Match that with my height and the low ceiling in the room I have my Wii in, and you have a game that is basically impossible to play as intended. Once I get a rhythm down, I imagine this one will be fun, as the pickup game mode seems interesting, but for now, it occupies the bottom of my list.

re: Wii Sports Resort: The Official Thread of Kicking it Back on Wuhu Island

I haven't played all the games, but I'll rank the ones I have played so far:

1. Table Tennis - I had a lot of fun with this one. It's hard to judge whether to hit forehand or backhand, but that's not really the games fault. I wish the games were more than just to 6, though.

2. Sword Play - I think this game is awesome, but I use less actual sword slashes than quick flicks. Still, there is some strategy involved, and I'm pretty good at it.

3. Frisbee Golf - I am horrible at the game right now, but I still had a lot of fun with it. Disc Dog wasn't as fun, in my opinion, but it was a nice introduction to the Frisbee mechanics, which are very solid.

4. Bowling - I didn't feel much improvement over the original, but that doesn't make it a bad experience. It's still a heck of a lot of fun.

5. Golf - I actually was more frustrated by this version of golf than in Wii Sports, due to my own incompetence. But, the game works much better than the original.

6. Archery - I didn't have as much fun with this game as I thought I would. Maybe I need to play around with it more, but I didn't really think it was fun.

7. Wave Dashing - The controls are really sensitive. This is the only racing game I played, so I marginally enjoyed it, but not really.

8. Basketball - Isn't really like basketball. And is SOOOOO difficult.

re: Wii Sports Resort: The Official Thread of Kicking it Back on Wuhu Island

Here's mine:

1. Sky Sports: Flying around exploring the island is just plain fun (pun intended ). I've always enjoyed games that have a section that gives you a plot of land and says "Do whatever the hell you want," and M+ makes it all the more fun.

2. Sword Play: I don't know what to say. Oh wait, yes I do: Make a Stars Wars game already dammit!

3. Archery: So fun, I have problem holding it still, but nevertheless, awesome. My main gripe though is that I release the A button instead of Z by habit.

4. Bowling: Feels same as the original, but when the original was that good, I can't complain.

5. Power Cruising: I don't have many racers that use motion control that works great, but this does. Fun fun fun

6. Canoeing: Another great activity. It sure takes a lot out of you, but is very nice.

7. Table Tennis: I would have preferred regular tennis, but it's nice.

8. Wakeboarding: Far too simple for my taste. Just seems really easy. But fun nonetheless.

9. Golf: Controls are too sensitive to enjoy. I'll stick with the originals.

10. Basketball: Very difficult, but once you get a rhythm down, it gets better.

11. Cycling: Controls are very wonky for me. The game doesn't seem to register my movements correctly, which is s shame, considering the M+ attachment. However, the view around the island makes up for it a little, kind of like jogging in Wii Fit.

12. Frisbee: I suck at frisbee. In real life, and now in video game form. Very precise for those ho enjoy it ,but not me.

Overall though, WSR is fantastic. I can't rate this game out of 10 though, because when I do it, I do it corresponding to what I say. For example, "The Conduit is just average (6/10" or "Okami is perfect, a must-buy (10/10)." I find myself not saying that, and instead saying "Just plain fun," and there is no number score, that can do that saying justice. I recommend WSR to everyone who wants to have fun.

Have you actually played that pile of s**t? It's terrible!

I mean a real 1:1 motion lightsaber game. It was impossible to make one without motion plus, but now it's possible. So make one already LucasArts!

The sheer amount of variety and content in this game far exceed many other releases of this generation. Flyover or swordfighting alone would make great stand alone titles themselves.

I wouldn't really call it a new IP since Wii Sports came out in 2006. I'm not really insulting either. But I will say that I'm not super hyped for this game and would rather see Miyamoto work on more fully developed ideas than mini game collections.

Looks promising, I hope to pick it up soon along with Little King's Story just to make me broke. =/

Anyway, how sensitive is the W+? Is it actually something I should bother with or is it not as good as they say it is?

What I meant is that Miyamoto considers Wuhu Island a new IP, much like Mario or Link, and hopes to see it appear in more games.

re: Wii Sports Resort: The Official Thread of Kicking it Back on Wuhu Island

http://us.wii.com/iwata_asks/wiisportsresort/vol1_page2.jsp

quote
Shimamura: Um, no... Well, he actually spoke about an island. It was known as the "Island Concept".

Iwata: The "Island Concept"? What does that mean exactly?

Shimamura: I think that Miyamoto-san might be the best person to ask about that one...

Iwata: Miyamoto-san, could you explain the "Island Concept"?

Miyamoto: Certainly. I had been thinking about the "Island Concept" in one form or another for more than ten years.

Iwata: You'd been thinking about it for that long?

Miyamoto: Well, one part of Nintendo's business has been creating a whole host of characters which we have then licensed out.

Iwata: Characters like Mario and Donkey Kong.

Miyamoto: That's right. But I've always thought, seeing as we are a games company, that in addition to characters resembling people, why couldn't we also turn the actual stages of games into characters?

Iwata: So now that we've turned people's caricatures into characters by way of Mii characters, you thought about actually turning the island that forms the setting for the game into a character?

Miyamoto: And also licensing it out as a franchise.

Iwata:Licensing an island! (laughs)

Miyamoto: We've discussed ideas like this for a long time, with suggestions such as: "Let's create Dream Island!" We also experimented on Wii Fit by making a large island.

Iwata: Ah, yes: "Wii Fit Island". Is the island in Wii Sports Resort the same island as Wii Fit?

Miyamoto: It's called Wuhu Island, but the concept is more or less the same. We really polished up the island, turned it into a resort and actually made the location into a kind of character. This will then lead to a series of island games...

Iwata: So you'll be releasing a series of games?

Miyamoto: You could have adventure games, role-playing games, city-building simulation games... It will be fun to see all the ideas that we can come up with, won't it?

Iwata: So the idea is basically to use the same island as the location and then afterwards develop games covering all sorts of genres. Shimamura-san, how did you react when you first heard about the "Island Concept"? Did you have any reservations about it?

Shimamura: Well, I was really taken aback. In fact, I was at a loss for words! (laughs)

Iwata: Well, that's not surprising considering you'd just heard someone suggest turning an island into a character and then licensing it out! (laughs) Having just heard the explanation, I understand the concept but under normal circumstances, I think anyone would find themselves thinking: "What on earth is this person talking about?"

Shimamura: Absolutely! (laughs) Using an island as the setting for a game is very common, but the idea of turning it into a franchise...

Iwata: So how did you end up coming round to the idea?

Shimamura: Well, I heard an explanation that really made everything fall into place. If you see a street on TV that you've been to before, even if it was just the once, you'll always say: "Hey! I know that place!"

Miyamoto: We thought it would be a fun idea to have a location that everyone knows and then have all sorts of stuff going on there. It would mean that players would already know the town like the back of their hands by the time they came to buy the next adventure game. Everyone could play in a location they were familiar with which would truly turn it into a miniature garden.

Iwata: So the player would already know the terrain and the layout of the streets.

Shimamura: If you play Wii Sports Resort even once, you'll get a good feel for the lay of the land. That means that if you buy a new game, you could be dropped anywhere on the island and it wouldn't take you long to work out where you were.

Yamashita: That's why Miyamoto-san suggested we make symbols. If you have symbols and landmarks on the island, it will be a lot easier to pinpoint your location.

Iwata: When you put it like that, it occurs to me that there were various memorable landmarks dotted around the island in Wii Fit. Was that intentional?

Miyamoto: Indeed it was.

Yamashita: This time, the mountain is also in the dead centre of the island, but it wasn't like that originally.

Shimamura: There were just a few fairly small rocky mountains but that was all.

Yamashita: We decided to go all out and created a huge volcano. Then we put ancient ruins behind it.

Shimamura: We were instructed to make the island large with plenty of open space so that it could be used for other titles in the future.

Actually, I wouldn't mind. The minigames in Zelda are good already, so why not compact all of them into one giant mini-game island.

Just imagine, in the next Zelda, there's a teleporter that takes you to Wuhu island, which would be about the size of OoT Hyrule Field, where you can spend hours playing mini-games. I would actually like that.
