	It's probably involved with the fact that he's an assassin and I've come across 2 options: 1. This was used as a means of discipline 2. he was captured and tortured for information and in the process they cut off his finger.

	you have to be a master assassin to get ur finger cut off not to join them,also when he jumps off a building move the caera to look at his shadow,it looks like an eagle,Altiar means flying egal or something like that in a dif language ------------------- 95% of teens listen to rap. 	your all wrong, when altair was a noob and he first got the hidden blade, he tried releasing it and cut off his ring finger. well thats my story anyway

	You don't need to be a Master Assassin to get your finger cut off. It is cut off for the point that the blade can slide right through your index finger. It's neccesary to do this when you join the brother hood. As okumsup mentioned, it was probably a minor mistake from the creators. -------------------
