I would say MGS: Shadow Moses, that's where it all started for me and ever since that game I've become a fan of the series.

My Favorite is between this and 3. Both made me cry.
overall scale would be MGS4 >= MGS3 (Still in debate there) > MGS1 > MGSPO > MGS2 > The crappy acid series -------------------  April 2010!!!!!!!! | |

AaI~ I'd have to say It's a mix between MGS1 and MGS4. They're both so good, MGS4 wraps the story up brilliantly, while MGS1 starts the story of one of the best game series' in history.
