Playable Characters |
|
This thread is for discussing what characters you would like to be able to control in this game, in what capacity, and what role or roles you'd like to see them in. Now, obviously we have our half-red, half-naked half-devil Dante, as a given, but who else do you want to use to mow down demons? Would you like Lucia to make a return to player character status? Do you think Trish deserves another try, and in a larger role than an extra costume? Should Lady have her own move-set, perhaps even her own missions? And what of the ever asskickuolous Vergil turned Nelo?
Me, personally, I have some thoughts on what to do. Now, ideally, it would be nice if Dante, Vergil, Lady, Lucia, and Trish all got their own story arc, complete with unique missions, like DMC2, only more diverse, rather than just being alternate costumes (looking at you, Trish), or running through an identical story (Vergil, don't give me that glare, you know you're guilty). However, while the new disc design is powerful, I don't think we can really expect such things without turning each story into a shallow, short shadow of a real DMC experience. However, I did have an idea which I'm kind of proud of. Now, Dante as we know is the man of the game, the big shot with all the story. However, these other characters do play vital support roles to the story that flesh it out and make it all happen. So, I thought to myself, how do you give these fun, important characters, playable roles and missions, without them just being cheap shadows of Dante's, or just hoping for the near-impossible? And I looked, and I had what I think may have been a revelation, there before me lay the answer. Secret missions. Just think about it, rather than doing secret missions as Dante, you could come across other characters and optionally take control of them to perform some important but not vital side quest. Clear an infested building, collect a rare item, you know, the usual secret mission stuff. In this way, the option to play the characters in situations tailored to their fighting styles, giving a truly unique game-play experience, could be fit into the game, with real rewards (Blue Orb Fragments for Dante is the classic prize), but without creating some impossible jumble of distracting, for player and developer, alternate story modes. I really think that would be awesome, just imagine it, you're exploring around a level, and come across Lady. You speak to her, and she mentions a nearby nest of demons she's going to clear out. You can either choose to take control of her, and try and wipe out the demons with her comparatively weaker arsenal, and in return get something useful like a Blue Orb Fragment for Dante, or just keep going if you only want to play on the main story. In this way you could really flesh out the game, diversify the playing experience (optionally, for the player), let the support characters strut their stuff under your control, and generally allow them to do what they are there to do, help out Dante (and hinder at times, heh), but without him needing them, more or less, which is usually the idea, that he's a go it alone bad-ass. Anyway, that's an idea I had, anyone else got anything to add, share or say -------------------

I'm saying that it's a mighty good idea.
Would it also mean special cutscenes for those characters? Or areas that you can only enter while controlling a certain character, because of character-recognition, or, more sensible, a key? ------------------- Just type your favorite series/novel/film/author in the search box. Possibly, it would depend how they made it work, a short cut-scene for the characters talking would be a nice touch, if you accept the mission. As for the areas, some might be in places you can go as Dante, but others could be, say, clearing out out of the way nests and stuff like that, which Dante never goes to, though you could make it so he can but, keep the mission for them, mainly, I think, makes it more diverse

well isn't this game suppose to be a prequel or sequel or something for the first dmc? if that's correct (not sure) then having some of those characters in the game might not make much sense storywise.
plus i think lady would just be stupid to play as. :Þ ------------------- Swing that bottle

I don't know when it's set, but I've seen concept art for Nelo, Lucia, Trish and Lady, so I was just going off of what seemed to be what we'd get. It could just be some of those characters, my main point was how they could be integrated into the story, as secret missions
Oh and Lady has her own move-set, between her boss fight and her helping you during the credits of DMC3, there's plenty of basis for a character that can battle at least weaker demons. She could be fun to use, I think, for a new perspective, experience what it's like for a room of Hells to be a serious challenge, not just style meter practice -------------------

If I ever am lucky enough to become a game-designer, I'm going to nick ideas from smart fans.

quote Pox AmericusAll we really know is that it takes place after DMC1, we don't know if it's after DMC2, if they'll even acknowledge DMC2 or anything of that nature yet. Personally, I feel that unless they're going to go to the trouble to properly design a second character with proper missions in they shouldn't bother. Lucia (from what I recall) had only a few deviations from Dante's path, and a shorter game to boot. Vergil in DMC3:SE had so much potential that wasn't fulfilled. So unless they put proper effort into making it worthwhile, I'd rather they spend all the time making sure Dante's missions are as good as they can possibly make them.

re: Playable Characters |

I definitely want them to develop Dante's story fully, but I think it's been demonstrated fairly well that Capcom struggle to fit in two independent story lines on DMC games. I know PS3 is a new world, so to speak, but still. None the less, I think most who have played will agree that using different characters like Vergil is a lot of fun, even if they're just like costume changes, no original story (save perhaps a cut scene or two). That's one reason I think the idea of using them for secret missions would be a good one, it's what they are, their very nature is to be support characters, so I reckon, it would make sense to play them as such. DMC3: SE had plenty of moves for Dante and Vergil, and from the looks of it, even Lady at the end had something designed to face the same kind of enemies you face. On the PS3 I could see several playable characters being implemented, I mean each Devil Arm for Dante is like a separate character almost. Vergil had 3 Devil Arms, if you split them up that's like 3 separate characters, Lady, Trish and Lucia, shouldn't take up too much room. I just think it would be sweet, being able to add to the main game experience and letting the characters affect the story, just like you said they should DMan, but without doing something daft like expecting Lady to take on the whole castle, tower or whatever, the same way Dante does. It's just an idea, but it would let you try out different play styles, and give the supporting characters supportable playable roles, without eating up time put into Dante's story, since you're just replacing his secret missions

well there are certain parts when you can take control of other characters in dmc3 like...vergil in mission 19 when you fight arkhem. vergil will jump in to help at some point press start on another controler and a second player controls vergil so its a strong possibility they will allow you to do an improved version of this in dmc 4

Ehem, if this is set after DMC 1 then I'm afriad that Vergil is most likely dead, so unless its just as something to unlock and mess around with you won't be seeing Vergil in DMC4, appart from possibly in a flashback.
But then again they might try to milk his cow one last time and mysteriosly have him survive. This message was edited by Waluigi_the_KF on Jul 20 2006.

Vergil AKA Nelo Angelo died on ission 17, Lady is probably long gone by now Trish would be in DMC4 possibly but I doubt Lucia. So the only way thay would have them in the game is to not follow the storyline but just eye candy and your fun.

That actually suprised me when I first read it but Capcom might not do it considering the only fan based thing in DMC3 SE was Jester and maybe the new orb system and varied difficulties although it is a possibility.
