You bring up a valid point. While some can easily be explained away (eg the ball slot that opens the doors on the SP Frigate at the beginning of MP1 could just be a ball key) some cannot be easily explained. Indeed, the spinners seem very odd locking methods. I'm sure there could be far simplier methods for securing systems and areas, and the Pirates clearly don't have Morph Ball technology itself. It does beg the qustion as to what they do have instead, and why they would use a system like that in the first place.

One question I've always has about the Metroid series is why are there all these coloured doors around the place?

I think you're all takig the morph ball spinner too seriously. Sure, it's not technically correct, but you can probably point out a thousand things the SPs could do that would stop Samus easily, or hinder her more than putting locked doors around.
But if Retro/SPs did these things, they wouldn't be a game, or the game would be incredibly different, either unforgivingly hard but of the SPs, or easy because Retro try to balance it out. So you can try and point out flaws in the story, or try to justify them (which is probably quite possible, even in this case if you really think about it). But I think I'll scan stuff and shoot things. -------------------

well obviously its just a game and when it comes down to it not everything fits together because the programmers just threw it in to provide a puzzle to try and overcome or perhaps just because they thought it would arbitrarily work. However thinking that way is not much fun.
I like theorizing about the workings of various things within the metroid universe because it gives it more depth to me. it might be correct or not but it doesnt really matter. taking a game litteraly and not immersing oneself in the story, characters, environments, or any other aspect of the game is leaving it only 2 dimensional. you just skim the surface instead of delving into its depths ------------------- Confuscious say "Elevator smell very different to midget"

henners, you're supposed to encourage discussion, not try and kill it off completely.
Imagine if the pirates had simply used those impassable doors throughout their facilities (those doors that scan for the pirates and Samus' scan visor couldn't bypass). Then again, it's not the first thing to not make sense. Someone brought up the concept of Samus' disappearing equipment in the Echoes forum. No explanation. Maybe she has to sell it off to support her lifestyle. =/ -------------------

i like the explination better that the equipment has to be within a certain proximity of where she gets them for them to work or she removes them because they use too much power.
there is always going to be stuff that doesnt make sense and doesnt fit. that stuff kinda happens when a series like this has been on the go for 20 years (august 6 was the 20 year anniversary of metroid and we didnt do anything!) ------------------- Confuscious say "Elevator smell very different to midget"

Yeah, that's a good theory. Or maybe the upgrades aren't 100% stable and naturally break down after so long.

as for space pirates and their bomb/spinner recepticles....sp's are known for stealing alien technology. They had been inhabiting chozo worlds for a while and morph ball technology is likely chozo in origin. so possibly pirates stole the technology for the recepticle locks and mechinism developing some sort of "key" not realising that the technology was actually designed for samus' morph ball.
morph ball technology isnt dedicated only to the chozo however since the luminoth had it integrated into their systems too. ------------------- Confuscious say "Elevator smell very different to midget"

Here's my theory:
The pirates insert a ball and spin it really fast somehow. And for bomb slots they chuck in a grenade. Why? Because this tech would be rare that anyone can bypass the security. ------------------- "Life will punch you in the nuts every chance it gets. Can't just be any old grenade. A regular explosive probably wouldn't do much. I mean, Samus can fire her beams and missiles in bomb-slots all she wants and they won't activate.

Maybe (although there are no logs suggesting it) the pirates were able to copy morph ball bombs. But since they couldn't use the morph ball without being horribly mangled and disfigured, they were only able to apply this technology to grenade launchers.

re: General Discussion 2: Echoes |

maybe we are thinking about this too litteraly. the space pirates likely stole the morph ball recepticle technology from the enlightened species of the universe (chozo and luminoth etc...) but they would've had to have adapted it to their own current technology and though processes. it is unlikely that they would have a recepticle that they would throw explosive devices at to open. More likely they have some sort of energy key which gets absorbed into the machine to power it. Because the technology was adapted from the chozo technology which samus' morphball and bombs comes from her technology probably integrates almost on a backwards compatability theory.
the spinning key theory is unefficient but not too unreasonable given the use those spinning recepticles are for. most of them are used to slide a bridge in place or open a door which requires moving gears and parts. i suppose it is more efficient than manually turning a crank ------------------- Confuscious say "Elevator smell very different to midget"
