Actually, I'm not bad at old games. I just suck at this one.

Here's my order of favourite Metroid games:
1. Super Metroid Easily the pinnacle of the Metroid franchise, and definitely one of the finest games ever created. It's immaculate blend of exploration, precise control, haunting atmosphere and "Wow!" moments is a sight to behold, a game that plays just as well now as it did back then. 2. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes Oh, yes. That's right - I like the sequal more than the original Prime. And it's not without reasoning too. Whereas Prime was an excellent game, Echoes pushes it multiple steps further. The visuals are better. The sound design is superior. The environmental puzzles (specifically those involving the morph ball puzzles) are much more involving. The atmosphere is much more 'alien' and hostile (which is critical to any Metroid game). The game is harder. The artistic qualities are more refined. The bosses are more impressive. And overall, the game is just more satisfying. In my opinion anyway. 3. Metroid Prime Just behind the sequal, Metroid Prime was a revolutionary step forward for the Metroid franchise. People doubted it, but it came out tops with its incredible transition to 3D. It contained almost everything a Metroid game needs - terrific artistic design, fantastic exploration and, most importantly, it was just amazingly fun to play. The only things it lacked were a haunting atmosphere and a really good soundtrack. 4. Metroid Fusion The Black Sheep of the Metroid franchise, but it actually one of my favourites. Fusion took a bold step for the franchise - it became quite story-based and introduced several new gameplay mechanics. It certainly succeeded in providing a creepy, tense atmosphere, and furthermore it provided intense, enjoyable exploration and action. Though it may have been too restrictive in terms of exploring the whole B.S.L, I thought Fusion was a blast from beginning to end. 5. Metroid: Zero Mission A terrific remake of the original Metroid, Zero Mission maintained what made Super Metroid so great whilst providing nostalgia as well as new gameplay mechanics. Zero Mission contained some amazing shinespark tricks, as well as plenty of satisfying boss battles and puzzles. Visting old Zebes never felt so good. Unfortunately, the end scenario was not as refined as the majority of the game, and moreover, Zero Mission was just too short. The sheer speed and playability of the game meant that it simply couldn't last very long.[/b] 6. Metroid It may appear dated by today's standards, but back in the old days of the NES, Metroid was an amazing experience. We couldn't see it's flaws back then, and the game benefitted as a result, providing a terrific mix of exploration, action and atmosphere. It also contained arguably the best soundtrack of all Metroid games. It might not be as impressive now, but it was still an amazing game. Most importantly, it gave birth to the franchise we all know and love. 7. Metroid 2: Return of Samus Return of Samus is not a bad Metroid game at all. In fact, it has plenty of enjoyable moments. However, it is just too confusing to be truly seen as great. The techinical issues with the Game Boy didn't help, but even then, the reptitive corridors, questionable music uninspired art design just don't hold up anymore. It's still a very solid game, but doesn't compare to other Metroid titles. I do not consider Pinball and Hunters to be part of the Metroid series. ------------------- ![]()

It's a First Person Shooter that contains very few aspects of the Metroid universe. It just isn't a proper Metroid game.

quote AlkalineTrue, but it is part of the storyline although it has no effect on the Prime series as of yet. I see what you mean though, the lack of Metroid styled puzzles, the total lack of Metroids, and having nothing to do with the Prime series main plot. Hell it should've just been called Samus's Adventure.

As I said in a different thread, if Nintendo were to take Samus out of the game, then the actual product would barely be changed.

Yeah, you're right. But who would want to play Metroid without Samus? Or Zelda without Link? No one. Besides, Samus looks hella-cool, who could possibly replace her?

Thanks mate.
Yeah, I see your point, but Hunters didn't even have to be a Metroid game. If Samus wasn't in it, I would probably like it a whole lot more, because there isn't much in Hunters that is actually "Metroid". If it didn't contain Samus, I would consider it a terrific handheld FPS. That what it actually is, but it's also a very average Metroid game. ------------------- ![]()

Yeah, you're right. We just expect too much from the Metroid series. We expect the best, and if all it can deliver is "good", then we complain. We suck. Ah well...

Well, I guess after Super Metroid and Metroid Prime you have to expect only the best.

Ya Super Metroid for the Super Nintendo took the series from "decent" to "platinum" in my opinion. Metroid Prime did this effect for the younger generation.
I think that's why we expect so much from this series. -------------------

To really tell you the truth, I don;t think that the team that made the game wasn't very into metroid. I mean everything about it was blaw (cept some of the landscape) and they hardly tried to hide the expansion packs. It just wasn't done by the pros.

As of now, I'm not too interested with the new visor. That ship being used for combat is weird in my opinion. The Dark or Thermal Visor should have been in this game instead.
I'm glad the X-Ray Visor is back. ------------------- quote Daydreaming
