They say I'm not "Up to their standards." What the hell is going on?

Perhaps you have to get your stealth level up? Try picking more pockets and stealing more stuff, and eventually you will be high enough to join the guild...

u dont get ur stealth up u get ur security up and that has nothin 2 do wit joinin the thieves guild. just helps when ur in the thieves guild.

Exactly, even if you check the uesp guide, it shows NO starting requirements to join some/most guilds, only to advance in it. So that can't be it. Dark, please describe your character for me(where you are in the main quest-other guilds that you joined). I'm pretty sure that I remember reading about how if you go up too high in ranks for a certain other guild, the theives' guild wont accept you.
Also, if he killed someone in the theive's guild, not only would he be unable to join, but once he went into the building, the theif guild memebers would go on a killing spree!

It's probably the guild thing. I'm a Conjurer in the mages guild and a swordsman in the fighters guild. I started off waiting for the theives guild so I could get Sottilde's code book. Damn!

I think it has something to do with a quest overlay between the fighter's and theives' guild. I'm pretty sure there is a backdoor to get in though. I'll go look.
But swordsman is still just rank 4... hmm. What about your main quest?
I do see some problems with the last few fighter's guild quests which include killing theif guild leaders, but I don't understand why you can't join? Who are you talking to to try to join? Maybe try a different person/get their disposition up?

It seems that there is an extreme rivalry between these two guild's and their quests. They even involve taking over the other guild towards the last quests. Seems like if you don't join them both from the very begining, there are a lot of things that you can do to get yourself unable to join the other guild. Though, I would suggest only joining one, or the other.

There is a way to get it done. When Gentleman Jim asks you to merge the two guilds, after you're done the mission will just be skipped.

Note that Sottilde is a member of the Thieves Guild, so if you end up killing her, it will affect your membership. Sottilde is just inside the Cornerclub entrance and refuses to give you the code book right away, in fact she may deny even having it. If you increase her disposition enough, she should give it to you eventually

heres what you do
go to the balmora mage's guild, buy a charm spell(costs a good bit), now go to a spellmaker and make one(err like 5-5 or 10-10 pts for 1 second; don't worry it will last forever on npcs.) Now go to her, raise her disposition to 100, and get it from her by using friendly means. Yeah.. that's if all you want is to get the book. Still can't join the theives' guild probably though. You COULD start over =/ but whatever you said before, do what you want. I personally only think that the mage's guild is worth joining(enchants can easily replace the prizes you get for becoming guildmaster; I always make a belt that has open 100 pts on touch.)

I already have the book. You can't get it from her if you're a part of the theives guild, which is a bit ironic and a bit damned stupid. I need the theives guild to get the bonus off of training, and for eliminating my bounties. if I have to start over....

Well if you aren't currently in the theive's guild, and the person isn't letting you join, there doesn't seem to be anything you can do about it =/
You could just not commit crimes(taunt someone 100 times and hope that they eventually attack you, which they do)
Some people are easier to taunt than others and it always help to have their disposition at 100 before you start(another use for the charm spell mentioned ^^^^)'

Also, if this person has nothing to do with any other quest but this one, you can just tuant her until she attacks you then kill her(no crime or anything). This does work right? I'm pretty sure guilds don't react to you taunting their members into trying to attack you, then killing them but anyway.

IF you do start over **** the fighter's guild and only join the theives' guild.
