 Yes, that's exactly what it looks like.  I find it a strange coincidence because I was walking home from the train station today, in the rain, and I noticed how my umbrella was broken. I was also trained in the Japanese school of Hastily Thrust Your Umbrella Against the Wind to Get it the Right Way Again. I was walking back to the hotel from the train station and it was pouring so I just dropped into 711 and got a cheapo one. It's one of the few things from Japan that's endured.
