New from E3. And Dayam!
quote IGN
Square Enix had only just officially announced Final Fantasy XIII at its E3 2006 press conference, but that didn't stop the company from announcing its sequel. Final Fantasy Versus XIII is being created by the team behind Kingdom Hearts 2 and will be an "extreme action game" that serves as the direct sequel to Final Fantasy XIII and will appear on the PS3. The trailer for the game was done by the team that put together Advent Children.

There is just a small piece about this game next to the actual FFXIII article in this month's OPM. It is as follows [it as featured as a '5 things you need to know kind of thing']:
quote01] The FFVII: Advent Children team is creating the movie scenes.
02] The game sytem is made by the Kingdom Hearts II team. It won't be an updated version of the KHII engine, but a whole new one built just for this game.
03] The theme? Nomura answers "Bond".
04] The general story: The main character's kingdom has protected the crystal for many generations. Those dudes with the medieval armor and machine guns are from the outer world, and the main character is protecting the crystal from them. Said main character isn't actually the king, but he's part of the king's lineage.
05] Nomura comments on the look of his game, "Versus XIII is supposed to resemble the modern-day world. I wanted to make this world resemble our world we live in today. This is integrated into the story as well, but the reason why I chose to use a Shakespeare quote at the beginning of the trailer is to make the tie with the real world we live in today.

quote FINAL FANTASY Versus XIII for PlayStation 3 system Harmony is realized in this alternate tale of FINAL FANTASY XIII
Not a merely a sequel, but a wholly independent story unfolding in a different world with different characters. This title will appear alongside FINAL FANTASY XIII on the PlayStation 3 system.
When coupled with FINAL FANTASY XIII, FINAL FANTASY Versus XIII completes the core of the FABULA NOVA CRYSTALLIS Project.

We now have a trailer description, but no trailer
quote IGN
Finally, the Versus trailer started with a view of a modern looking city during the evening. Shifting to a view inside one of the buildings with a man sitting on a throne, the trailer went on to explain how one isolated city housing the last crystal, protected by its king, stands alone, resisting the 'heretic order' of the outside world. Then, the man on the throne stands and leaves the building, as the battle for the last crystal begins. Outside the building, the man is met by several dozens of armed soldiers who notice his appearance. As he walks down the stairs, the soldiers start firing on him, but it's futile. Apparently, the power of the 'king' is too much for them, as he seems nearly invulnerable to their attacks. Soon, the force surrounding the man materializes into several swords. The 'king' grabs one as the trailer ends. From the looks of things, Versus is going to be very action-based, but it'll be more about ancient technology (swords, crystals) going up against modern tech (guns). This seems to be the recurring theme in all of the FFXIII games.

Final Fantasy XIII/Versus Details
In an interview with Dengeki PlayStation (a popular Japanese gaming magazine), character designer Tetsuya Nomura and game director Motomu Toriyama gave info on Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII for PlayStation 3.
The first details they spoke about had to do with the “White Engine”; the proprietary engine that will power Square Enix's next gen PS3 titles. With this new engine Nomura hopes to recreate battle scenes reminiscent of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.
The next thing that they talked about was the characters from Final Fantasy Versus XIII. While Nomura did confirm there would be a heroine in the game, the main focus will be around the male character who is the heir to the throne of a war torn kingdom. Nomura also mentioned that when you wield a sword his eyes will turn red…I am guessing this is to make him look more bad ass.
So far there has been no set release date for either of the Final Fantasy XIII games; however, it will probably be sometime early 2008 since FFXIII is only 3% done and Versus is only at a merely 1%. On a better note though, Toriyama hinted that Square Enix will be releasing a new trailer next month for Final Fantasy XIII and will provide information on new characters.

quoteFinal Fantasy XIII Update New details on FFXIII and Versus. by IGN Staff
US, January 10, 2007 - Following up on the latest series of trailers that were first aired at the Jump Festa event in Tokyo late last year, Famitsu has scored interviews with the key personnel behind the Fabula Nova Crystallis series to shed some light into how things are going with the next generation of Final Fantasy.
The magazine first confirms some of what we gathered from the main Final Fantasy XIII trailer, an updated version of the E3 trailer with a few new scenes and a prologue section. In the main FFXIII game, the world is split into two parts: Cocoon and Pulse. Cocoon is a space colony that houses a few million people. Pulse is everything outside of it.
For the people of Cocoon, Pulse is a frightening place. Those who come into contact with it are believed to be elements of a plot to invade Cocoon and are banished from the protections of the Cocoon realm by the "holy" government and its army. The original E3 trailer depicted a group of people who seemed to be confined on a train. These people had come into contact with Pulse and were being quarantined.
Cocoon is protected by crystals. This may not necessarily be the case for the rest of the games in the Fabula Nova Crystalis series, but the crystals in FFXIII are more than just shiny stones with magic abilities. They have the ability to create real life objects. They make life easy for people in Cocoon by creating machines and living creatures.
The relationship between Cocoon and Pulse can be thought of as this, according to director Motome Toriyama. First, there was Pulse, a dangerous world where people reside under the fear of monster attack. Cocoon was made when the crystals considered what would be an appropriate living space for people forced to reside in the world of Pulse.
As mentioned in our writeup on the Jump trailer, the female character who is assumed to be FFXIII's main character is known as Lightning, although that's not her real name. A battle expert with mastery of gun, sword, hand-to-hand, and magic based combat, Lightning knows little about herself. In fact, she's not even sure of her real name, and Toriyama says that we should look forward to finding out the reason for this as part of the storyline. Lighting was once a high ranking official in an organization of some form. Now, according to the prologue that kicks off the trailer, she's been selected as an enemy to all of man kind and will bring destruction to the world.
The trailer also served as the debut of a second character, a blonde-haired guy who speeds in on a motorcycle as Lightning finds herself surrounded by government troops. While the magazine doesn't provide any details on this character, it does provide some surprises about his motorcycle. Famitsu reveals that the bike is a transformed version of Shiva, the water-based summon spell that makes a brief appearance in the Jump trailer. In FFXIII, Shiva takes the form of a sister pair, and both sisters are made up of bike parts, complete with a wheel behind the head. Toriyama wouldn't spill the details, but hinted that you might be able to ride the transformed Shiva in battle, in addition to using it as a means of transportation when outside of battle.
Once again, most of the details in this latest update have been saved for the main FFXIII title, with only tiny bits coming our way on Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Mostly, Famitsu describes what went on in the Jump trailer, itself an extended version of the E3 trailer, but there are a few details that we missed during our initial viewing.
At the beginning of the trailer, as the main character speeds down a highway in the back seat of a car, he's listening to a news broadcast on the radio. This broadcast describes how two countries have come to a treaty about peaceful use of crystals.
Crystals have a different role in the Versus world, director Tetsuya Nomura explained to Famitsu. In Versus, crystals exist only in the main character's country. A long cold war revolving around these crystals, has, as suggested by the news broadcast, at last begun to clear.
One point of interest in the trailer regards the main character's eyes and features, which seem to change based on his moves. During battle, his eyes are red, and when he darts from place to place, his hair flashes white. Director Tetsuya Nomura revealed to the magazine that, while nothing has been confirmed, it's possible that his eyes will change to other colors as well, including green.
Nomura offered a few hints on the kind of battle system we can expect from Versus. The trailer shows the main character selecting from a number of different weapons to defeat the hundreds of enemy soldiers that stand before him. The various weapons in the game will have different methods of attack, and some will even be usable as shields. Weapons will have some sort of customization element. Of course, the main character won't have his full arsenal available to him at the outset of the game.
While everything we've seen of Versus so far has been CG concept footage, Nomura revealed that we will at long last get to see the game running on actual PS3 hardware some time this year.
But before that, let's hope Square Enix is good enough to make the Jump trailers available for download so that everyone can have a look at the latest from FFXIII. Source
