HELLS HIGHWAY STORY EXPLAINED (SPOILERS) |
|
Are you one of these people? (WARNING SPOILERS)
· Wondering why Baker lands in a Glider on the trailer? HE'S A PARATROOPER FOR CHRIST SAKE! · Wondering how the story will progress? · Is it true to the authenticity of the real life operation market garden? Well here are all of your questions answered! Using notes provided by the after action reports, I will clarify the authenticity of the game. First I'm going to display the lay out for the hell's highway game. Here we can see (going off the D-day date of September 17th) the times and more importantly the places of happening throughout the game. Starting with Operation Market on D-day 1300 The parachute echelon of the Division began its drop at 1300 on D-Day, September 17, 1944. We all know that Baker and his men were members of the 502nd PIR and within that, F Company. F Company was part of the 2nd Battalion. So before we start our investigation, we know that Baker, Legget, Hassey and Garnett, and most of them were in fact 101st Airborne Division, 502nd PIR , F Company, what platoon im not sure. D-DAY for the 502nd 'The 502nd Parachute Infantry with 3 platoons 326th Airborne Engineers Battalion attached, landed on DZ "B" without enemy opposition and all Battalions were assembled by 1500. The 1st Battalion proceeded to ST. OEDENRODE and after a skirmish, seized the town and its objective, the bridge over the DOMMEL RIVER, intact. This Battalion then proceeded to gig in at dark and had the situation well in hand. Company "H" of the 3rd Battalion proceeded to the Highway Bridge at Best; secured it initially against little enemy resistance, but was forced to withdraw just before dark by reason of a strong enemy counterattack. The remainder of the 3rd Battalion was then dispatched to join "H' Company, with orders to secure the bridge the next morning. The remainder of the Regiment went into Division Reserve in the vicinity of WOLFSEVINKL' But on the game map, we can see that Baker's lot don't follow it in the same order, In fact on the game map we can see that baker heads towards Zon, and here we will take part in the mission 'Five-oh-sink' just two hours later at 1500 hours. Five-Oh-sink are the 506th as they were lead by colonel sink, hence five-oh-sink. This allows me to believe that Baker spends D-day mainly with the 506th at Zon rather with the 502nd moving towards ST. OEDENRODE. The 3rd Battalion worked their way towards the bridge at Best. Lets have a look at the 506th on D-day 'The 506th Parachute Infantry landed on DZ "C" without enemy opposition. Companies of the 1st Battalion departed immediately without formal assembly in an effort to secure the three bridges over the WILHELMINA CANAL in the vicinity of ZON before they could be blown by the enemy. Scattered enemy resistance was encountered before the main bridge and forward elements were within 100 yards of this bridge when it was blown by the retreating enemy. (It was found that two bridges had been blown several days before). The Regiment began the crossing of the canal by various expecients, and by 2400 the entire regiment was on the south side of the Canal and a bridgehead extending for some 2,000 yards' IS BAKER 502nd? Baker in Road to Hill 30 and Earned in Blood was a member of the 502nd, but I believe he is no more a member of this unit, and rather a member working closer with the Divisional Headquarters. This involves members of the signals platoon, Medical etc, but more important reconnaissance platoon. It is the last of those three that I believe Baker is assigned to. His platoon as well as himself from the earlier games is now part of the Reconnaissance platoon attached to the divisional headquarters for special use. There he is left of Baker and behind Red. Colonel Sink, head of 506th. Baker and his men must be situated with the 506th. This must be the Zon mission. If you study the maps surrounding Zon you will probably discover the windmill clearly visible in the background. 'The Command Echelon of Division Headquarters jumped with the 502d Parachute Regiment and established an initial Command Post at ZON. Some 70 gliders carrying additional Command personnel, the Reconnaissance Platoon, Signal and Medical Personnel, and some transportation for the combat units, landed on the LZ about 0ne hour after the parachute landings. Overall time of landing of all parachutists and gliders was one and one-half hours. Communication was established with all elements except the 501 by dark on this Date' I believe that Baker is in fact going to be part of these additional command personnel that land in the Glider. From here I believe that Baker will make his way with elements of the 506th 101st Airborne to Zon Bridge, where as it states above in the after action report, that those command echelon troops set up a command post. I believe that Baker and the lads from here on will act as a Reconnaissance Platoon, probing enemy forces prior to the approach of the 506th towards Eindhoven, where Baker is for D+1. I believe here he will still be under the command of colonel sink and 506th units. After action here, I believe baker will head to assist the 502nd at ST. OEDENRODE. So is Baker Recon the answer is yes. I thought maybe he was now part of the 327th Glider Infantry 101st Airborne but sources show he is attached to Division HQ. He now serves a specialist role. The R painted upon their helmets is to signify that they are in fact the Reconnaissance platoon. Probably something Baker's lot have decided to do, like when they painted the 13 on. Below is the clip in which The Zon Bridge is destroyed. The Bridge was blown by the retreating enemy as the Americans got within 100 metres from it.

You know your stuff but there are going to be 8 missions in HH:
1.Operation 'Market'-the landing stage of the operation-you take control of a small village and defend the rest of the glider drop zones with your squad. 2,3,4,5.Take place in or around Eindhoven, this includes the taking of the city and attacking the 88's, defending the city during the firebombing and one in a hospital.(I'm not sure about how many missions actually are in Eindhoven but I think it is around 4) 6.Zon-basically it's attacking and holding the town and bridges. 7.'Black Friday'-you must assault the town of Veghel in the midst of a thunderstorm to re-open the supply route to Arnhem. This was shown in a recent gameplay video at Ubidays. 8.'Hells Highway'-the final chapter in the game sees you and the rest of your squad making one final push up the infamous highway through all sorts of burning vechiles. This has been shown on the Face Stab and Ubidays trailers. P.S.I may not be 100% correct about the Eindhoven missions but the others I am more or less. Also except for missions 1,7,8 the missions aren't in chronological order in the list above. ------------------- It was simple get a few trucks up a highway. But in life nothing is ever that simple.
