Multiplayer Discussion

OK, just had a shot of online there and have to say it was immense. Not a bit of lag in sight with 32 players on the screen and the modes are terrific.

However there are some issues already. The servers are not stable, whether because this is the first dayu, I do not know. I basically can't get logged on anymore and really hope this isn't a sign of things to come. Sony have had plenty warning with the volume online with the amount of pre-orders but if they can't provide decent servers then I can see a lot of angry faces.

Hopefully though it is just an initial problem as once on it is amazing.

re: Multiplayer Discussion

Yeah I'm still having troubles connecting, it's usual at the first couple of days even tho Sony should have learned its lesson from other games such as Metal Gear Online where the players were unable to login for a couple of days.

They really should have put the servers online a few days early and been better prepared, I'm very disappointed.

However, I did play on a little bit earlier and I have to say that it's pretty amazing and beats the hell out of Skirmish.

Just like every online game, it takes time for the servers to become stable.

Patience.

Played a good session there, finishing 2nd overall on the winning side and it was smooth as could be.

One thing I noticed is that it might be region locked. You get asked this before you enter, which region you are from, which may affect clans.

The maps are great even though there is only 8. Absolutely massive but suits the gameplay well I reckon.

Overall, vey impressed with online so far bar a few teething issues.

re: Multiplayer Discussion

I've managed to logon and play a few games and here are my thoughts.

First of all I'd like to stress out how extremely hard it was to put down the controller long enough for me to post this.

First of all the game controls are just as I explained before they are the same as they are in Skirmish. You get to see your health bar and your sprint bar, if your health goes down you will auto regenerate about half of it, the rest is up for medics to take care of.

The squad system is one of the best I've seen to date, once you level up you are able to create a squad and invite other players from the game into your squad, you get to see their health and know when one of them has been downed and goes into bleedout time. Other than that whether a tactician has set a spawn point or not you are always able to spawn right onto your squad which is an extremely useful feature.

The gameplay is as I've explained before very dynamic. This is one of the very few games which I can describe as being extremely tactical and teamwork based. If you work alone you will definitely die and the entire team will lose. Unfortunately I've played with some idiots already, for example when you're the assassination target DO NOT go into the front line and try to fight, you run and HIDE COMPLETELY until the timer runs out. Most people I've played with already rush out to run'ngun even when they're the assassination target.

You will level up based on your performance in the round as far as I can tell, you will earch ribbons which I'm guessing are trophies based on your progress in each mission, for example, if you got 10% of the kills in the round you'll get 1/8 Kill Specialist complete, once you reach 8/8 which means 8 games you will earn that ribbon.

The servers are very well done, I've noticed very very little lag in a 32 player game and the lag isn't the type where your character hangs in his place or jumps around the map but simply you shoot someone and they die a split second later.

Fortunately many people seem to be using the mic, I haven't been in one completely silent game yet.

As for classes, it is crucial that we have every type available, engineers are extremely important and vital to winning the game, medics should be available in each and every squad. Those two I feel will play the most important role, that's not to say that there's no need for the rest of the classes, each class is exteremly useful and very much needed to win the game.

These are my first impressions of the online multiplayer part of Killzone 2, I'll post more later on but for now, back to the game.

re: Multiplayer Discussion

Have to agree with everything Dresken has said. Online is very team focused and will be great for clans. Unfortunatley at the moment I haven't played in any games where anybody is higher than the 3rd rank so not seen any classes yet bar the standard one. Its basically one big shootout at the moment which isn't a bad thing but feel the game will improve once classes come into play.

I live in AUS and have been trying to connect to a game but keep getting network error codes, is this happening to anyone else? Never had a problem playing online till now, hope it's just because it's the first day, they better get this sorted fast.

Same here. The only other game I've played with squad mechanics is MGO, but I joined the matches quite late, and I couldn't find any stead team mates. I'm really excited to be playing as part of a squad, and actually using team work to win games.

There were some server issues last night however they were soon fixed. Not tested today yet though.

I'm sure one of you guys said that they've removed the cover system in online multiplayer?? Is this true?? If so, then isn't that a little hard, especially when you cant go prone either...

re: Multiplayer Discussion

There is no cover system online which is a good thing because with the size of the maps everyone would just be hiding. There are plenty of things to hide behind and shoot out from but you can't cover like offline.
