There might be one or two references to the original that you might not get, but it's pretty easy to tell who's who, and who's friends with who, who wants to kill who, and who has the biggest breasts.  -------------------

Story in a nutshell:
the Helghast live on Helgan. They invaded a ISA planet called Vekta. you played as Jan (pronounced Yan) Templar and fought them off, eventually killing some of the leaders of the assault. Killzone: Liberation (for the psp) found you playing as Templar again. This time you mopped up the helghast forces still left on Vekta. Once again, you kill a few of the Helghast commanders. Killzone 2 sees you, as Sev, invading Helgan in Earth's retaliation against them for the attack. ------------------- | |

Take it from me, I've never played the previous games and probably never will. Yet I understood Killzone 2's story just fine. Besides, if you are really curious, just look up the backstory on Wikipedia or something

Not really. I mean the only thing that I really benefited from playing the first game was knowing the helghast had attacked vekta (home planet of the guys you play) and know they're attackign the helghast's planet. Plus I was familiar with Rico's and Templar's relationship, which didnt really add to much overall.

Not necessary to play the past games, but they have a much better storyline though. The two betrayals were pretty good plot twists for each game. While Killzone had 4 playable characters and Liberation had some co-op on it (Templar and Rico/Evelyn). Killzone 2 was sorely missing some serious storyline progression, instead of more strict military stuff with each cutscene just pointing out objectives. Never gave you a breather unlike the first game, which had awesome cutscenes.

Never played Killzone in my life until I picked up KZ2 (shameful I know!). Story was simple to pick up to be honest. There was a few points where I think the characters referred to past events (probably from the previous games) where I was a bit like
