When Mario dies so shall the universe. Mario is like the force you see. And us Nintendo dudes are like the Jedi.

re: Is Mario a dying franchise?

I agree. Viva Mario.

SM64 was one of my favorite all-time games. But I agree that Sunshine was not up to par with it as a platformer. I'm sure Galaxy will be a blast, but I hope they produce a more traditionally straightforward Mario platformer in the future as well, instead of just these "gimicky" ones (Sunshine with the FLUDD and Mario Galaxy flying around in space).

I'd love to see them re-invent the style of the franchise again, or maybe take Mario back to his roots. Like instead of chasing stars, maybe we are fighting good old goombas and hammer bros. trying to save the Princess again by finding Bowser and jumping on a conveniently-placed golden axe but then finding out from Toad that the princess is in another castle.

re: Is Mario a dying franchise?

Doesn't look likely. Nintendo is a bit wrapped up in turning Mario into a game of every possible genre, than producing one that's actually worth playing.

I just wanna know how many times do you guys want Mario to keep saving Peach that bitch needs a life. I liked the switch up they did with mario sunshine and Galaxy also the sports titles they are still coming out with.

re: Is Mario a dying franchise?

Yeah. saving peach is a dying story line. its been used in like 90% of all Mario games. However i do love the fact that it takes place in the galaxy. it seems like nintendo should have done it a long time ago. i never even thought of that. and if it turns out to be not so great, im sure it will be better than having the plot take place at mushroom kingdom

re: Is Mario a dying franchise?

90% of real Mario games. There are like 100 Mario titles that have nothing to do with Peach..Or Mario for that matter. Sports and dance titles...Mario Party...

Without changing mario they wouldn't have survived the transition from 2D to 3D platformer...Mario had to evolve from just running around and jumping, just loook at Banjo-Kazooie, they didn't make a sequel to that game because of it's lack of depth, it wasn't a up-to-date game...Mario 64 was for it's time, but they had to do something extra with Super Mario Sunshine. Look at the LOZ games, they are way ahead of their time and they always have gimmicks.

Sorry guys, I was kinda being sarcastic with that last bit. You're right, the original Mario would not make a good 2D to 3D transition.

However, I do really want to see a more traditional, nostalgic Mario platformer (like SM64) because I think that the franchise (including the Party and Sports games) thrives on simplicity and rock-solid controls, and I feel the FLUDD in Sunshine took away from the overall experience, thus making a weaker game. On the other hand, one could argue that even SM64 had a gimick in the colored boxes.

Either way, I'll still be picking up a copy of Galaxy. Who knows, we may even be able to visit the Mushroom Kingdom as one of the planets in Galaxy...

re: Is Mario a dying franchise?

Yeah, same here, as for the Mario saving Princess peach argument, I think it's ridiculous. You say you want a new plot, but if Nintendo made a new one, I can guarentee you there would be a million people whinining all over this forum.

Haha, I know that. Did you read anything else I wrote before? I love SM64.

But there are a ton of differences between SM64 and the original Super Mario Bros. on the NES. They made many (admittedly necessary) changes to the franchise to make the transition from 2D to 3D.

Read the last page or so of posts on the thread and it should make a lot more sense.
